Is this it?
This is probably it and probably the shittiest idea I’ve ever seen - gonna alienate a large portion of current UFC viewers who don’t give 3 Shits and a Soda about ESPN+

UFC is bigger then ESPN+ but those that run the show now are using UFC to sell ESPN+

Expect the Banks of Rivers across the US to be full of Fishermen going forward.

No way that can be it. Game changer? Shiiiieeeet.
It's pretty huge in the business sense.

The overall deal was extended 2 more years and you can bet that the UFC is going to get a far larger cut of the revenue than they would get from the cable/satellite providers if they're giving ESPN exclusive rights.

I watched a bit of this infomercial
  • trust me this thing is going to streaming
  • no one else knows shit about the business
  • Ari buys stuff on a whim
  • so they have bought a giant extension to the performance institute
  • there's gonna be institutes all over the goddam place
  • ufc always proves all the doubters wrong

Wanting me to buy the ESPN streaming service on top of what I was already paying for Fight Pass, buying a few PPVs a year, ensuring my TV package had FS1, attending live shows, etc. was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. Requiring me to buy ESPN+ for the privilege of buying PPVs is just a further slap in the face.

I stopped giving money to UFC at the start of the year, when I cancelled Fight Pass and refuse to subscribe to ESPN+ for any reason. I am tired of being treated like a wallet to be vacuumed out. Under the Fertittas, sure it was a business and profits were the main goal, but at least they treated you as valued customers. Under the Hollywood regime, I see no love for the sport, just a desire to gouge the fans. From spending several hundred dollars a year supporting the UFC, I've decided to give zero dollars to the new owners from now on.

FrankieNYC @FrankieNYC

Do you think that this means that Dave Meltzer will no longer have inside info on PPV numbers?
FrankieNYC @FrankieNYC is it because the UFC gets a bigger cut this way?
Just getting to this. My sleep schedule is all messed and going back in hospital later, but I will see what I can find out by morning.

But UFC would have to be getting a bigger cut to do this.
Plus I bet the 2 year extension is for more money too.

I agree with those that said this hurts UFC as far as reach goes

But we would need to know the money part to say if it is a good deal or not.

As far as Meltzer keeping UFC honest about the numbers on future PPV, I don't see how he will get the numbers monthly like now.
He might when he gets their yearly filings though.

As far as MMA biz, this is huge news.
I have a gut feeling there is a lot more to it too.

New UFC/ESPN+ PPV deal looks to hurt the main event fighters

WME don't make deals that hurt them financially, so you know they are getting a nice deal from ESPN to give them the exclusive PPV rights in US.

There is no chance that each PPV won't do a lot fewer purchases being exclusive to a subscription stream.

We know by UFC filings that have been reported that UFC only pays 13-17% of rev to fighters.

but the big money was in PPV points.
Now that PPV buys will be even lower than they were becoming each year, that really hurts the fighters with PPV points.

UFC will be getting a bigger cut to most likely make up the PPV sale difference and I wouldn't doubt that they received a nice amount to extend their US deal 2 more years.

But this deal means fighters on a big card that make decent money with PPV, might not (Conor will certainly, but can others get UFC to pony up more?)

Also the days of each PPV buy getting reported are over.
Meltzer/Nash/Ourand might get the PPV numbers eventually through yearly filings or investor reports, but no more monthly reports on the sales.

On a personal note, I'm going in hospital later today, so I might not post for awhile.
Catch you on the flip-side & have fun

Also ...

Here is the thing with UFC & PPV moving forward

They will certainly be doing lower numbers exclusive to ESPN+ then if they were on traditional PPV

The Conor/Khabib fight did about 25-30% of the buys through streaming.
So that is 70-75% that ordered it through a way they won't be able to now.

So they will be taking a huge hit

We also won't know the numbers through an outside source (like Meltzer).
His monthly estimates always wound up either exact or close when compared to official numbers that UFC filed to lenders or gave to investors.

Now whatever number DW says (if he does) will be it, until a filing or investor doc gets out there.
