So let me begin by acknowledging that there are of course many retards in the boxing fanbase. But anyone who has followed both sports even somewhat closely knows that the general level of idiocy in MMA is far greater.

Boxing fans in general seem to understand basic things like how weight classes work and why they exist, and they also understand that professional male fighters will not lose to women. Far more MMA fans seem to struggle with these very basic concepts.

Some have theorized that this is a demographic thing - that MMA fans are by and large white trash, and this is certainly part of the explanation.

But this recent Jon Jones-Israel Adesanya hype has made me realize that once again, it's largely the MMA media's fault and it's why collectively MMA journalists should be held in the same esteem as NAMBLA.

MMA discourse is driven solely by bottom-feeding clickbait whereas in other sports it's only mostly driven by bottom-feeding clickbait. Any story that pairs one popular fighter with another is given oxygen and there's basically nobody in a position of influence that says 'hang on - why the fuck are we taking this seriously and even talking about it?'

Because the ridiculousness is the only thing that people hear, that actually wills ridiculous things into existence which makes any retarded shit sound normal and worth discussing.

What say you, dipshits? Are you retarded because you're a Trump-voting, buck-toothed hillbilly? Or are you just retarded because everyone else is retarded too?

You hit the nail on the head here.

I didn't take any of the Jones-Adesanya stuff seriously, but then again I voted for Hillary.

I like when some guy from my village came in to watch the ncaa wrestling I recorded at me local saloon
He said “oh yeah, I’m into wrestling as I’m into the ufc and kickbox”
I said where
He said “every other week at the Tesco (local grocery store) community room (that’s the size of my living room - I would argue that my living room is bigger but it’s close enough to not argue the point)”
Then goes on to tell me how he knows all the disciplines, yada yada yada but NEVER wrestled nor even “rolled” in a jiu jitsu class.
After sitting up in my chair after resting my beer on my beer gut and promptly grabbing my beer before it spilled down the front of me bloody pants, I questioned him some more and he was your typical headline reader who told me all about McGregor and jones and khalabib yet has no idea who gaethje and barboza are and didn’t even know who Diaz was
I’m not mentally regressed and let the conversation dwindle away as he was one of dem people’s who knows fuck all about anything legit about the sport

If anyone has a problem with this post, shut up

Boxing for 100+ years has been a spectator sport that has had memorable and incredible prize fights. We've listen to true experts analyze and dissect these great matches and fighters for decades. There's a true understanding of the sweet science.

MMA is relatively new, the nuances of the individual disciplines of the sport are often lost on the casual fan who wants to see bloody KO's in a "Rock Em Sock Em" style fight by two guys who have been overall training for 2 years, rather than a technical battle between two true experts in their craft.

MMA also suffers from the marketing of specific fighters only. We get told who we should think is great, who is "World Class", Who is the greatest fighter, rather than watching that ourselves. The hype machine tells us what to like, who to like... But when we see those fighters with the glaring holes in their game, we fans start balking at the hype machine, leading to mass bashing of the fighters, or ridiculous nut hugging (not geared at you CMNH).

There is a large number of people who train nowadays.... Kids who have been training since age 7, going on 16, and are 2 years off pro fight debuts.... There is a growing knowledge of MMA, and with that will come a better understanding of the sport that is barely 25 years old.

While of course none of this actually happened, there is somehow a good point here.

The "most people don't know shit about boxing" line holds, and these types of dipshit casual fans exist in that sport too. But despite the nuances of boxing, people still fundamentally understand punching people in the head on some level.

In MMA it's the hardcores who are complete spastics too though. And I think it's because so many people have no idea whatsoever about what they are watching, that they forget simple shit. It convinces them that the armbars Ronda is pulling off is some sort of sorcery that transcends weight and gender. Boxing fans might not understand intricacies, but they know if Canelo tries to fight Anthony Joshua, he's getting taken out of the ring on a stretcher.

Have you ever seen the fat stupid cunt Dana talk about fights? The cocksucker literally has no greater understanding of what's happened than the drunk guy at the end of the bar despite being the President of the UFC for nearly 20 years. He is the fanbase in a nutshell.

All good points, and they still hold mostly true regardless, but it is important to note that I'm talking about the 'hardcore' fan that posts on internet forums and such, not just dipshit casuals. While the forums have seen waves of new casuals in different eras that add to the general level of retardation -your TUF 1 fans, your Brock Lesnar fans, your Ronda fans, your Conor fans - even a Conor or Ronda fan that then became a hardcore has been a fan for several years now. Yet things are as stupid as ever. It just seems ingrained even in many long-time fans.

So I think your first point is important. Because of the history, there are some proper experts in the boxing media that get their voices heard and prevent things from getting too ridiculous. Because it's not like boxing doesn't experience waves of casual dipshittery too when new PPV stars emerge.

Dana is a good friend of mine. Please refrain from delivering any further insults.

Paulie? He's annoying, he's a walking stereotype, doesn't have the greatest vocabulary but he actually comes across as quite intelligent.

@Rhino nailed the key points.

You're talking about over a hundred years of history in one skillset, a science.
There are no 80-year-old MMA fans.
At least not in North America.

Opposite the dumbest generations society has ever known, coupled with the most emotionally immature promoter the world may have ever known running the show.
Combine that with a 25-year-old sport that covers multiple disciplines and everyone with a phone has instant credentials, and you've got a painfully naive fanbase.

Voting patterns have nothing to do with it.
People are equally as stupid on the far side of each spectrum.

Couldn't agree more.... Even in BJJ, which I have 20 years experience, there's been a shift in techniques that are always evolving and improving.... It started in 1925, and almost 100 years later it's still being tweaked for maximum success. The only other TMA that has a long storied studied history, is wrestling (even there, folk, freestyle, Greco-Roman, shoot.... Different styles), but people aren't thrilled by wrestling like boxing (I feel due to the lack of KO finishes).

That and like you said, people today are fucking morons, soooo..... Yeah LOL
