What a weird post-fight speech from Rory after the majority draw with Fitch last night. He talked about the influence of God in his life and how it conflicts with his role as a fighter.

"I don't know if I have that drive to hurt people anymore."

You can hear him talk about it here:

So Rory can have God and retire from MMA. Or he can "defy" God go in the cage and hurt people. But if he tries to have both he's going to become a martyr because other fighters are going to go in there and whip his ass.

There’s nothing in the Bible that says a man can’t fight for a living. But hey, if he feels that he’s being led in a different direction, then more power to him.

I feel it is an easy position to rationalize. He is entering a contest with another willing participant. It is an athletic event, not an attempt to inflict malicious harm. He isn’t going after people outside the cage. I personally see no conflict. He has the ability to use his spotlight and notoriety to be an example and a role model while bringing a positive message. Let him bang bro.

This reminds me a bit of former WBC light heavyweight boxing champ Donny Lalonde. He was abused as a kid, and while obviously a talented boxer who went pretty far, he wasn't comfortable hurting other people because of what he had gone through.

No Ring Violence Can Equal What Donny Lalonde Knew at Home

On a unrelated note, there's a Teddy Atlas with a gun story involving Donny Lalonde. Teddy doesn't just reserve gun incidents for Mike Tyson!

Totally disagree.

That's a losing proposition. If you're Scott Coker, you're going to be stuck trying to promote your welterweight champion as a guy who doesn't want to hurt people.

If you're a fan, are you going to want to pay for tickets to watch a guy who's entering a fight with a mentality like he's involved in a sparring session?

If you're Rory's coach do you believe he still possesses the will to go to war like he did with Robbie Lawler? (Personally, I believe that fight took part of Rory's soul). Let's say in his next title defense, likely against Nieman Gracie, you're Rory's coach and the fight is going into the fifth round tied at two rounds apiece. You're going to tell him, "Go for it! Leave it all on the line! You gotta stop that guy!" But you'll be wondering whether your protege still has the heart and desire to really go after his opponent. He's lacking the fire in the belly.

As followers of this sport, we talk about Rory vs. Lawler as an AMAZING test of wills and we will still watch highlights of that epic night for years to come. Are we going to reflect on Rory vs. Fitch and the "role model" Rory was that night? Nah, bro. That fight will be forgotten by tomorrow.

Rory MacDonald been a helluva remarkable warrior throughout most of his career but he sure sounds like he's losing interest. He's happy to keep the belt around his waist and collect championship paychecks for now but he's Rocky in Rocky III, and it's just a matter of time until Clubber Lang comes along and eats his lunch.

By the way, there are other fighters out there who praise god regularly but they climb into the cage and they're looking to do harm. I'll gladly watch them instead of a guy who believes the angel on his shoulder is whispering in his ear, "Please Rory, don't hurt 'em."

Rory's argument on the face of it is absolutely correct. If you believe in peace and good will toward men, it's pretty much impossible to get yourself in the right mindset for MMA which is premised on totally othering and dehumanizing your opponent to the point where they are just an object you will manipulate and harm for profit. Much like BDSM, just because it's consensual doesn't mean all parties aren't a little effed up when they engage in it.

Whatever he decides to do, I hope he finds peace within himself. We see too many self destructive people so if being crazy religious helps him and makes him happy, go for it.

I don't care for fighter's religion but definitely sounds bettter than

"God gave me power to punch this fucker's face" or

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me with PEDS"

Stick a fork in him. He's done. Fitch beat the fear of the Lord into Rory. For a fighter that is at the championship level to be speaking like this. He's not in the mindset to continue competing at a high level or fighting in general. Time to hang em up

Wasn't there just an article about him not testing free agency and wanting to re-sign with bellator?
