Russian heavyweight legend Fedor Emelianenko revealed during an appearance on the FightSpirit Championship 5 broadcast in Russia that he will announce his promotional signing in 2-3 weeks.

The return of Fedor Emelianenko continues to be a topic that attracts attention from pundits and fans alike, as many eagerly anticipate the end of the sweepstakes for the Russian heavyweight to determine where he will fight in the near future.

According to a recent report from CombatPress.com, Emelianenko has already signed with the UFC and is awaiting an official announcement from the promotion. However, according to the Russian heavyweight, he remains fixed in negotiations for the time being.

Fedor was present at FightSpirit Championship 5 in Russia as the guest of honor and revealed during a quick interview that he would announce his potential signing in the next couple of weeks.

"I can not say exactly, but negotiations with the leading promoters are in place," said Fedor. "In the next two or three weeks everything will become clear."

While rumours and reports have suggested that Fedor's first fight could take place at the UFC's anticipated stadium show in Melbourne, Australia, the Russian wants his first fight to be in either Japan or the United States. He also added that he will also take a fight in Russia shortly thereafter.

"I want to spend my return fight abroad, in Japan or the United States," Fedor confirmed (h/t Sovsport.ru). "But later I will definitely schedule a fight in my homeland, Russia"

With negotiations seemingly ongoing, it will be interesting where the legendary fighter settles over the coming weeks.

I feel like I'm alone in being excited for the prospect of Fedor in the UFC. It seems many fans are like "Yeah ok, whatev."

I think it's great. Yes, it's not as great as when he previously negotiated with Zuffa, that would have been the optimal time to see Fedor in the UFC because you could argue he hadn't fallen off by then because he still had not lost a fight in almost 10 years (even if his skills started to diminish toward the end).

However, if Fedor fights in the UFC, I think it's great for a few reasons:

  1. Fedor's back. What's so terrible about that?
  2. Fedor fighting for the UFC should get him serious Hall of Fame consideration, considering he was employed by Zuffa and the lion's share of Fedor's best fights happened in a promotion that the UFC currently holds the rights to. Fair or unfair, Zuffa will write the history of MMA for future generations because they control the narrative, and now that narrative may not exclude the legacy of Fedor.
  3. If he scores even one revenge victory - particularly if that victory is against Werdum - that will add a twist to Fedor's legacy.
  4. Heaven forbid Fedor actually has an Arlovskian career resurgence, people would lose their minds (and love the hell out of it).
  5. Last but not least, Fedor will not have the albatross of "having never fought for the UFC" hanging over him.

Since the UFC had recently negotiated a television broadcast deal in Russia to deliver UFC programming to over 50 million homes, many fans and pundits alike knew it was only a matter of time before the promotion attempted to push for an event in the Eurasian market.

While the UFC has refereed to Russia one of the "new global markets," they are yet to make a formal announcement regarding a potential debut event. With a slew of potential obstacles in their path, and an ambitious agenda fueling them, there is little to guarantee that the promotion could actually schedule a show in Russia.

"It's 129 countries, and we've been to six of them, so we've got another 123 to try and get to," Allen told MMAjunkie. "Everybody wants us to come, and that's a fantastic place to be in. We want to look at some new markets, for sure. that we haven't visited in the past, and I think that one of or priorities will be to try and break into some of the big mixed martial arts markets - the likes of Russia.

With a host of talented fighters from the region, including potential title contenderKhabib Nurmagomedov, the UFC's interest in expanding to such a fruitful market is understandable. With a rapidly expanding MMA market and limitless local talent and resources, Russia has now become a "priority" for UFC executives.

"We want to try and get an event held in Russia, and that's a priority for us as a business. Whether we can get it done in 2016? Different conversation. But we definitely want to do that, and then France."

I could care less, The UFC is only out to discredit Fedor so its gonna be a side show to the end.

I always thought he'd sign a one fight contract and probably in Japan.

If he won 1 Ufc fight in dramatic fashion then just left and headlined some St. Petersburg M1 or something it would be just....unsatisfying.

When he stands in the Octagon I will be excited, until then, Baldo of Zuffeebok is capable of preventing/screwing it up it even when considered a sure thing.

I like this idea. Russians vs eastern euros. Trouble le is it wouldn't be in English so wouldn't get that much steam in the USA

It's a great idea but fedors management team is a fickle bunch and I doubt they'd allow Fedor to be on a TV without some insane stipulation.

I'm not excited for Fedor, Dan Henderson fucked him up. Knocked him out while he was on all fours. Bigfoot was way too big for him. Whats an older fedor going to do? Rematch arlovski then have him fight cain? A drop to 205 sounds better to me.
