Stipe Miocic will finally get what he has wanted since last summer.

Daniel Cormier is set to defend his UFC heavyweight title against Miocic in a rematch at UFC 241 on Aug. 17 in Anaheim, ESPN reported Tuesday night.

“DC” has been linked to a potential bout against Brock Lesnar ever since he won the belt with a first-round knockout of Miocic last July at UFC 226, but ESPN reported Tuesday night that Lesnar has confirmed his retirement to UFC president Dana White.

Miocic, the winningest heavyweight champion in UFC history, has several times called for a rematch against Cormier since dropping the title. But with the Cormier vs. Lesnar bout targeted, it didn’t seem like Miocic’s wish would come true — until now.

Damn that's great... I think Stipe is for suuurree gonna have a different approach in this rematch. It looked like he was owning DC and frustrating him. Then BAM bashed him in the clinch.

I think I'd actually go with Stipe. He just has to respect that Man's power lol. DC undefeated at HW he is no joke.

This is always the fight that should have happened. I normally hate immediate rematches (especially when one person gets finished), but if anyone is deserving of one, it’s the guy who holds the most title defenses in HW history.

Stipe 100% shoulda had that rematch.

His loss wasn't a domination... he was winning up until then. Combine that with his dominance at HW in the UFC most title defenses. I've seen others get immediate rematches that were less warranted.
I can see ur argument if it was a close fight, almost went the distance, and at the final minute or two, someone gets KO’d then granted an immediate rematch

but in this case...It’s one of those situations where “so and so was winning until he lost” which could be applied to many many fights that ends up in a finish

Then we’re gonna see like Jones-Cormier 7, Cain- BigFoot 10, Anderson-Weidman 13

He got KO'd in a first round that was back & forth.
I agree there've been less deserved rematches, but he only defended successfully 3 times, looked bad in this fight, looked bad in the previous vs. Ngannou, and Werdum looked ridiculously terrible for him to win the belt.
Not to mention he hasn't fought since, though DC has successfully defended since.
I really think he should at least fight once first.

Imo, a rematch with Junior Dos Santos for #1 contender, who's impressively riding a 3-fight win streak since their initial meeting 2 years ago, is a more appropriate course of action.

To me it is more of a Stipe accomplishment thing. He was on a 6 fight winning streak, defended 3x the most out of any HW. DC beat Oezdemir prior... why did he even get a title shot at HW?

Because he is undefeated and fought there years ago? LHW "Champ" at the time, get it... but still.

Personally wanted to see the rematch because in my eyes Stipe started to whup on DC. It looked bad at first, then DC turned it around a got a lil momentum before the punch. Stipe got sloppy.

Doubt he does that again and underestimates DC. Not saying he would win. But he would have a more respectful cautious approach.

Back n forth right before he got stopped. He gassed a lil to me. Before that it looked like an easy night for Stipe. DC looked sloppy, frustrated not being able to reach him it seemed out of range.

Stipe just got sloppy himself and gassed a lil. Defense was relaxed in the clinch and BOP.

Silly HL but you can still see Stipe was dominating most of that fight. DC looked really frustrated. When Stipe started to gass from the ouput, his defense went to hell and that's when he was getting tagged here and there, then dropped.

Volkan looked great against DC, until he didnt. So did Rumble. We can make that argument about lots of fighters. Why not give everyone a rematch if that's the argument?

That's...definitely a way to look at it.

The ridiculous part is not just that they are giving an 'immediate' (I use the term loosely) rematch to a guy who got clean KOd, but that they are booking this match after both guys just sat out the entire time for nothing. It's been a giant waste of time. They are rewarding Stipe for throwing a hissy fit rather than guys like JDS who have actually fought for them.

It's a terrible way of doing business.

Dan didn't sit out, he fought while injured against hot balls, while injured. Other than that I kind of agree, however, Dan was told there would be a good payday (which he totally deserves) with brock. Not putting this fight together sooner is on the ufc, not the fighters.

Stipe lost a lot of money in the past year by not fighting, but now he has a chance to avenge the loss, which a potential loss in another fight would not have given him.

There are multiple angles to this

I forgot about the Lewis fight. I'm sure everyone else has as well as it was meaningless. Still, the rest stands. They are rewarding Stipe for sitting out a year after getting clean KOd.

Yeah, I can only come up with the theory that he has the best chance of beating daniel. Seeing that cormier is retiring after this fight, it would be the best from a ufc perspective for stipe to beat cormier on the way out, as that would leave a legit title holder they could build off of, from a marketing standpoint. Dumb logic, considering that if Daniel wins, it puts them in a place of setting up stipe vs someone else for the belt, but they don't seem to care about the big picture.

They're just lazy, not very bright and easily manipulated with matchups. They know what fights make money and don't care about the rest.

As an aside, I don't know why Cormier is bothering with this fight. He's got nothing really to gain. It won't sell well.

I totally agree. I'd imagine he negotiated a better than contract fight to do it. In the first fight he called stipe himself and told him to not accept the first offer and hold out for top dollar. I'd imagine Daniel was smart on this fight as well, but he really missed out on that brock payday, so hopefully he stuck it to the ufc. He deserves to get paid.
