As@b00ts said in the post before this one, the plan was for Drogon to light the trench. But the wind impeded Dany's visibility.
They tried to shoot it with fire arrows but those blew out in the wind. Grey Worm then decided to take a small contingent of Unsullied to protect Melisandre while she did her voodoo fire spell.
I have a theory that Jon Snow is a stupid Bitch!There’s Legit Proof That Bran Stark Is the Lord of Light and Jon Snow’s a “Fire Wight”
The theory comes from Reddit user u/dontmicrowavecats and offers a lot of semi-iffy proof that Bran and the Lord of Light are the same entity. That said, this particular line of thought is super compelling:
1. “Followers of the Lord of Light believe that their Lord is always at war with his evil opposite deity. There’s always a dichotomy. Light vs. Dark. Good vs. Bad. Fire vs. Ice. Everything in this world has an antithesis.”
2. “The Lord of Light supposedly has a ‘purpose’ for everyone. Consequently, everyone supposedly brought back by the Lord of Light [Editor’s note: Beric, Jon Snow, etc.] helped Arya defeat the Night King.”
3. “Bran gave Arya the dagger and offered himself as bait. So, like the Lord of Light, everything Bran has done recently also ultimately leads to Arya defeating the Night King.”
Okay, so this is where it gets really interesting. Let’s assume Bran is the Lord of Light, kay? If so, he’s in control of the FIRE WIGHTS. Oh, what are fire wights, you ask? Turns out, his main follower Beric—who sacrificed himself for Arya during Sunday’s episode—was one. To quote an interview with GoT creater George R. R. Martin, “He’s not a living human being anymore. His heart isn’t beating, his blood isn’t flowing in his veins. He’s a wight but a wight animated by fire instead of by ice. Now we’re getting back to the whole fire and ice thing.”
Okay, so if the Night King animates the icewights, who animates the fire wights? That would be the Lord of Light, aka Bran. Which brings up an even more major question: If Bran dies, do his fire wights also die? Obviously, Beric is already RIP—but this theory claims that Bran has been warging around and reviving all kinds of people we’d previously credited the Lord of Light with saving. Including Jon Snow.
“Bran has been manipulating the plotline the entire time. He knew exactly how the battle was going to end. He knew exactly how to kill the Night King, because he set the trap himself. While warging during the battle, he was likely manipulating events to lead to the final conclusion. Everything he has done has revolved around getting the dagger to Arya and getting her safely to the NK. That plan was set in motion all the way back in season 1. [...] All of the ‘magical Lord of Light moments’ that are supposedly the gods’ work are actually Bran warging through time and manipulating the past, resurrecting people and making sure Arya got the knife and made it to kill NK.”
These magical “Lord of Light moments” include Beric being repeatedly brought back to life, John being revived after his brutal murder, and even the Hound making it through. In other words, Bran created a bunch of fire wights and if he dies, they are (potentially) toast.

They should have had Ramsey wake up a a zombie and kill the night king, then take over the army by some loophole clause I can't think of
