Cole Smith made a successful UFC debut with a unanimous decision win over Mitch Gagnon at UFC Ottawa on Saturday, running his pro record to 7-0, but he's not happy at all with the compensation attached to his achievement.

“This sport sucks, man,” Smith told the media after his victory in Ottawa (via MMA Junkie). “Cutting weight, doing a bunch of (expletive) I don’t want to do, and I want to get paid accordingly. It’s one thing you’re fighting for peanuts your whole life. I’ve mooched rides, I’ve mooched food, my brothers have to give me clothes. It’s about time. I want to be paid.

“It’s bulls**t that someone in the NBA who doesn’t even touch the court is getting $600,000 while I’m out here fighting my ass off, and I’m getting $10,000.”

While Cole Smith isn’t happy with the way he and his peers are paid, he wants to assure that he is happy to be fighting for the UFC. He’s enjoyed the experience so far.

“I am super happy to be here – 100 percent,” Smith said. “My first experiences here have been absolutely amazing. They’ve treated me great. So just want to throw that out there. I love the UFC. I’m very proud to be here.”

keep winning and winning and you'll get a big 50k payday bud... This is a selfish sport and you can't be a fighter and expect to make a living fast.. I fought cuz I liked competing and was decent at it...I agree that ufc guys should be better paid...I think all you guys on the roster should be compensated annually.. even if it was 2k a month in between fights that would be a huge help to every fighter... and more performance based incentives to be a dynamic that benefits both sides.

Each ufc fighter is a unique, beautiful snowflake , for Dana to ski down.

lol @ him realising mid-sentence that he will be fucked even harder by the UFC after complaining, and he starts gushing about how much he loves them. sums up the brutal trap that UFC fighters are in.

Sounds like he should have thought about this before committing himself to a life of getting punched in the face. Its not like its a new problem

spoken like a man who's never been punched in the face.
I am one of the few people on this forum that has actually stepped in the cage. I got paid 200 bucks and that was because I sold tickets.

How many times have you been punched in the face inside a cage.

U N I O N

Except not even 30% could sign a card just to get a Federal investigation into their employee status because most UFC fighters are surprisingly scared.

I am really sad for our future that so many people don't understand the most basic of economic principals. People get paid what they are worth. Every. Single. Time. If you are not paid what you are worth, you change careers, get more jobs (2nd, 3rd), more education etc. If you accept a paycheck with an employer (or a contract in this case) then you CANNOT say you are not paid precisely what you are worth. You agreed in advance to the contract. Only a willing fool supports this kind of nonsense.
