Your move, Lil Kim!

Washington -- The United States has seized a North Korean cargo ship, alleging sanctions violations by the country, the Justice Department said Thursday.

The seizure is likely to heighten tensions between the two countries at a time when US efforts to dissuade North Korea from pursuing its nuclear weapons program have stalled following the failure of the Hanoi summit in February.

The ship, the M/V Wise Honest, was "used to illicitly ship coal from North Korea and to deliver heavy machinery to the (Democratic People's Republic of Korea)," the Justice Department said, alleging that "payments for maintenance, equipment, and improvements of the Wise Honest were made in US dollars through unwitting US banks.

"This conduct violates longstanding US law and United Nations Security Council resolutions," the Justice Department said.

It's unclear precisely when the ship was seized by the US, but a warrant for the seizure of the M/V Wise Honest was issued by a US federal judge in July 2018, according to a forfeiture complaint filed in the Southern District of New York.

US is saying all the coal is being sold to secondary markets, but I wonder if it's for use in NK. Kim can always buy another yacht. Splinty can sell him his.

Expect some retaliation of some kind from NK.
Hacking.
Bombing.
Shooting.
They usually retaliate tit for tat.

I think this was the retaliation. The Democratic peoples Republic of Korea tested a couple of short range missiles yesterday.

Trump says a lot of stupid stuff I admit that. He also has a carrot and a stick. Not afraid to pull out either one on the same person mid paragraph. Kim got the stick. Trump has a set of balls on him like it or not.

How does one get it into their head that the leader of the most powerful country in the world ordering other people to steal some random cargo ship from one of the poorest countries shows 'balls'? How does doing something that could never put yourself in any personal danger or have any personal negative consequences have anything to do with having 'balls'? You're not the only one who thinks this way, but it's fascinating that so many do. It makes no fucking sense.

Obama got Gaddafi killed. Did he have balls? That's a bit more aggressive than taking a cargo ship.

You could put a 10-year-old in charge of the US and he could nuke Russia. It wouldn't be because he's brave.

As for Trump on a personal level, the evidence is quite clear. Trump's a draft dodger and a pathologically insecure fag.

The ship was actually seized in April of 2018. NK was attempting to sell coal to China and Russia, which is a violation of their UN sanctions. Indonesia caught them trying to cross-dock a load of coal onto another ship. The ship also went to great measures attempting to disguise what they were doing and where they were from, including turning off their automatic signal system intended to alert other ships of its course and location. Just a whole shit-ton of international trade and maritime violations.

It sounds like America was afraid the ship was going to be returned to NK, which is why they have now seized it from Indonesia. As you mentioned - likely a move to punish them for the renewed missile tests.

It wasn't a random cargo ship. NK was violating UN sanctions. What good are the sanctions if they aren't enforced?

That's not my point in the slightest.

My point is that you give me the nuclear football tomorrow, then I'll be sitting there blindfolded in the Oval Office, one hand playing hide the cigar with a fat secretary, the other playing 'pin the tail on the donkey' with whichever country I'm going to wipe off the face of the Earth for my own amusement.

None of which has anything to do with the size of my balls, which I assure you are very small.

So if you were in charge and NK was caught violating UN sanctions, what would be your move? Just give the ship back?
I'm not talking about macho bullshit, but doing nothing is weak and ineffective.

I think what he means is that "strength" and "weakness" or "balls" or "guts" etc are inappropriate terms for describing the mostly technical process of diplomacy. In the US, since the Cold War at least (but maybe going back as far as the Monroe Doctrine), we've taken to these schoolyard terms as the only filter through which to understand how we interact with nations with whom we have disagreements. In reality, little the US does requires courage because economically and militarily, its dominance is greater than any country's in the history of the world. Strength, or rather the ability to assert power, is the default state of affairs rather than the exception. A better way to think of US diplomacy may be incentives and punishments. Ultimately the goal is simply compliance with what the US wants, regardless of which party or person is in the White House.

Good post, although I prefer my Monica Lewinsky scenario to coherent thoughts.

The only point of contention is whether or not the US is the most dominant power in the history of the world, even though it backs up my point.

In some important respects, it is. In others, no.

No power has ever had the global reach, financial and cultural power. But nukes change things. Just as Trump could end the world tomorrow, so could Putin.

Rome eventually fell, but nobody was ever capable of completely obliterating it with a press of a button and a couple of phone calls. And because of that, there's a bunch of shit it wants to do that it struggles to.
