Deserved is another matter and I agree. As I said I know some of those families would like his organs extracted while he's alive. The truth is and people don't like to hear it, the SRO gig is usually a nice easy gig. He was months away from retirement. I can't name one, not one cop who has been doing this for over 10 years who is not staying to to reach retirement and leave not a second later. They aren't gung ho like the guys out of the academy. I wish it weren't true. They hate the paperwork to arrest someone and hate the brass more than the criminals. The last part was my biggest eye opener.
completely agree. and public service employees shouldn't be allowed to unionize.

but that's another discussion.

The only reason I know about this is because I live here and my son goes to that school. 5 of his friends were among the 17 that aren't here any more. You probably know more than I do about other tragedies. I have just kept up with the meetings and have many friends that are leo's.
Sorry you and your kids had to go through that. One of my friends moms is the AP at the school and she described it as total chaos with people running everywhere just trying to get kids out of windows, etc. Hard to know what the right thing to do is in that madness.

Luckily my son was at a magnet school last year even though Stoneman is our home school. He went to middle school with the kids in the freshman building so that’s how he knew them and he’s a student there now.

I was at the gym and had a res for dinner as it was Vday. I was about a mile from the school. All hell broke loose. Sirens and helos overhead for hours even after they caught the suspect. My sons bus had to go past the school. It took them 3 hours longer to get home because of the chaos. I will never forget that day.

I guess it’s called gallows humor but kids at school make jokes about now. I think it’s better than them being frightened to go to school. This is a great city but the shooting will be the only thing anyone ever remembers it for.

It sounds like the DA is stretching the definition of "Caregiver" to apply to Peterson. But the charges of neglect stem from the fact that he "refused to investigate the source of the gunshots, retreated during the active shooting while victims were being shot and directed other law enforcement who arrived on scene to remain 500 feet away from the building,

According to Peterson, "I didn't get it right. But it wasn't because of some, 'Oh, I don't want to go into that building. Oh, I don't want to face somebody in there.' It wasn't like that at all. Those are my kids in there. I never would have sat there and let my kids get slaughtered. Never."

'Never' except for that one time when that was exactly what you did.

This is a subsection on definition of caregiver in Florida State Law.

Other person responsible for a child’s welfare” includes the child’s legal guardian or foster parent; an employee of any school, public or private child day care center, residential home, institution, facility, or agency; a law enforcement officer employed in any facility, service, or program for children that is operated or contracted by the Department of Juvenile Justice; or any other person legally responsible for the child’s welfare in a residential setting; and also includes an adult sitter or relative entrusted with a child’s care. For the purpose of departmental investigative jurisdiction, this definition does not include the following persons when they are acting in an official capacity: law enforcement officers, except as otherwise provided in this subsection; employees of municipal or county detention facilities; or employees of the Department of Corrections.

Are SROs contracted through Juvenile Justice?

It looks like that definitively excludes him, doesn't it?
100%.

the 'negligence' might be a better fit. I think reform of Qualified Immunity is overdue, but this seems to be a bridge too far.

but still, couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Maybe the next SRO that hears gunshots will think "death before dishonor".

Well what I can't figure out is why he told additional officers to stay back also. Unless he thought he was making the right call.

Like maybe waiting for more back up? It doesn't make sense to me.
