That isn’t the correct way to discipline a dog. You do it with leash training. It works.
Lots of ways to train a dog effectively. Leash training works well for walks, but if you have an aggressive dog (or a breed notorious for attacks), stronger tactics may be warranted and necessary. I have had dogs my whole life: Golden Retriver / Hungarian Visla mix (mutt), Pug, Olde English Bulldog, Staffordshire Terrier, Boxer, English Bulldog. Each required different tactics and levels of discipline to train them effectively and appropriately for their demeanor. There is no one size fits all model and no room for snowflake sensitivities if it is going to be done right. (That is a general statement - absolutely not directed at your comment N @Never_Rolled )

I’m not an expert but everyone in the class had different dogs and we all learned the same techniques and it worked on all the dogs so that’s all I know.

If they don't need to beat military working dogs it's extremely unlikely that someone needs to beat their labradoodle.
Where is the line between physical discipline and beating? Tap on the snout? Pulling on a choker? Shock collar? How does the psychological impact of noise/fear compare to a small yet effective physical correction? These are rhetorical. I’m not being a wise guy, just trying to say each dog/scenario requires a customized approach and there are many means to the end of a disciplined pet.

In class everything was done with a choker collar.

The dogs bred to have the highest level of drive, the highest levels of aggression in any dog you're ever going to see; require about 5% (or less) of their operant conditioning to be positive punishment. Conversely approximately 95% of their operant conditioning is achieved through positive reinforcement. Even the things you're talking about (choke and shock collars) aren't positive punishment, they're negative reinforcement where you're giving the dog the option to choose to no longer be exposed to the stimuli and they're also training aids. Ie, used to reinforce a behavior a dog already knows.

Beating your dog is a whole different ballgame.

Everything?

It strikes me as odd that they'd completely skip over the possibility that potential physical harm should be avoided as a first choice.
Just because the collar is on doesn't mean physical harm. It was 95% light tugging and after a while you didn't have to even do that. They listened to the commands. No dogs were hurt and the instructors were very hands on.

Generally you'd teach the commands and then introduce the collars to the dogs whom are having difficulty complying.

That being said, I wasn't attempting to imply abuse. Even a properly used prong can result in physical harm to a dog. Again, that's why I'm surprised it was option 1.

I have 3 dogs that total about 280 pounds.

Cane Corso, Victorian Bulldog and a Boxer/American Bulldog cross.

I don't hit them. Sometimes when you're training them you have to do a Caesar Milan pin. They know I'm really strong and can easily out wrestle them . I had to pin my newer dog once when I first got him but other than that I have t had to pin them in 2 years or so. I am firm on the leash and don't let them pull too.

All three dogs are amazingly trained and obedient. I can easily walk all three at once in public, as well as forests and parks filled with critters.

Hitting dogs just fucks them up usually. I have had over 15 mastiff type dogs and never had to hit them. All have been wonderful.

Basically what I’m saying is that I am a better dog owner than all you pussies that need to hit yours.

4 years ago I watched a parent from my sons judo class scream at his son to leave the mat after he hurt his brother. The kid did not want to go and cowered in the corner, he tried to reason with his dad but ultimately was taken off the mat and forced to change.

I had to go outside for a phone call and saw the dad taking his son to their car. He had no idea I was out there. He waited till he got across the street to start smacking his son, berating him for not listening to him and thus embarrassing him in front of all the other people in the gym.

I didn't know what to do. I could have gone over and tried to help but from previous interactions with the dad I was certain that interfering would not have gone over well at all. I also could have smashed the dad into the ground but I thought if I did then the kid would get beaten more when he got home and likely repeatedly over the next few days.

In the end I watched in silence and didn't intervene.

To this day I think about it and am not sure I made the right decision.

In my opinion you should go out and talk to the guy. Otherwise you may question your lack of action for the rest of your life.

Agree w this. They need to know you are in control and you're the alpha. That is easily accomplished without hitting them. Just takes patience which most ppl don't have. If the dog doesn't know you are in control they get sketchy and don't know how to act.

That is Awesome Lars, great to hear.

Are you roughly the same weight as your Current Sons combined? Maybe they respect the Alpha King and that is their reality.

Some people just have the right Vibe to control and mold their animal friends properly, I enjoy seeing those relationships.

You ever have/see those 250 LB mastiffs? met a pair once and they scared my ass pretty good, they were nice tho.

Care to share some of the techniques you learned?
They show you how to put on the collar as there is a right way and wrong way. They gave you drills like walk 10' and say halt at the same time pulling on the leash. They teach how to hold the leash with 2 hands. This class was about 2 months. After halting you go to sitting etc etc. The goal is to get them to obey verbal commands. The choker in the beginning is meant to reinforce verbal commands. After a few weeks even my bad and crazy Maltese was trained. I never thought it possible because my ex wife did everything wrong prior to taking him to training. he was her dog and she went to the first training with us and never went again so I basically trained her dog. Kind of sad but a couple years after he had a spinal infarct and all 4 paws locked up. I rushed him to vet. They got 3 paws back but the 4th was locked. It was a front paw and it rotated from the shoulder completely stiff under his belly. Doc said he would be better off with an amputation but ex wife wouldn't allow it. I took him to an acupuncture vet and tried everything plus he was in the animal hospital for a week. That cost close to 5 grand by the time we were done and that paw never came back. When we split up she dropped him off at the shelter. @Sloppy Bitch gangsterkathryn @gangsterkathryn the one on Boca Rio Rd south of Glades

What a cunt. Fuck her.
At least Maltese don’t last long at shelters and TriCounty is no kill.

Can’t be involved in this thread without having a rage.

She is/was a POS. I had our sons bank account in my name but his prepaid college was in her name. We split when he was 3 or 4 he had $17,000 in fund. She took it all out. She actually pays me support now. She is so far in arrears she will be paying until he's about 22. I just dump it in his account any way.

Well she doesn’t get to see or talk to her son. That was all because of her fuckery. That’s pretty bad payback. To make matters worse she has a path to be able to at least get supervised visits and won’t take those steps. I would crawl through burning broken glass to do what I had to do. He wants nothing to do with her.
