Defending the Bellator middleweight title has become just another job for sixteen-year MMA veteran Gegard Mousasi.

Speaking to MMA Fighting’s Damon Martin ahead of his title defense against Rafael Lovato at Bellator London this weekend, ‘The Dreamcatcher’ explained his true motivation for fighting — and it’s not for legacy or fame.

“I’m fighting to get paid,” Mousasi told MMAFighting ahead of his return at Bellator London on Saturday. “I’m not doing this because I love the sport so much. I’m not a crazy person. The motivation if I beat these guys, if I keep winning, my paycheck will go up eventually after my contract is done. That’s the motivation for me.”

seems to be the new mindset of fighters in mma I think the realize how brutal the lifestyle they lead is more now than in the past generations of fighters.

The older you get the more you start to think this way. Bellator takes in those seasoned fighters who were all passionate while they were young and in the UFC but now that they’re older they understand the price they pay to do this but have little choice but to keep fighting. It’s an odd career path that’s for sure.

I don't think the past fighters didn't realize it. They just didn't have the earnings or many post-fighting options. Most of them still don't.

Have you read his book of letters put together by his daughters? Don’t if you’re not ready to know how he really was (not a terrible person but flawed like the rest of us). I think it humanized him to me. It’s good stuff!

I've read his book, Man, Woman, Nature , Wisdom of Insecurity, Joyous Cosmology and they were great.

I know he was a raging alcoholic but he's waaaay more human than any religious blobs. he reminds me of more of a grounded comic
