On today's podcast with Maynard James Keenan, Joe was discussing how he believes that Mickey Rourke became the wacko that he is now because he decided to start getting punched in the head by James Toney later in his life. He then goes on to say that he has seen some Fighters who started off okay and who are now acting pretty crazy - which he blames on CTE.

Anyone have any guesses or inside info on fighters who became wacky after getting their heads beat in for a while....?

Rourke may have been affected by the boxing
but he is a hollywood actor and most of em lose it a bit

not sure his exact timeline

I don't like speculating on CTE effects on fighters...sad and touchy subject...lots of possibilities no doubt

CTE is literally just the new term for what we used to call being punch drunk and research on it has been going on for a century.

What the evolving research has done is to better quantify the damage and but it hasn't told us something we didn't already fundamentally know - that head trauma is bad for you and the negative impacts could manifest themselves in a variety of different ways.

But there's no research that exists that would enable us to categorically isolate CTE as the single causal factor in a specific individual's behavioral changes. Could getting punched in the head have turned Mickey Rourke cuckoo? Absolutely. Could the shitload of drugs he's done be the real problem? Absolutely. Combination? Absolutely. Definitely any single one of these things? No.

Geeze, getting smashed in the head repeatedly might change some people's behavior? No fucking shit. We all already know this.

He’s probably talking about GSP and the aliens. GSP took a lot of shots in his last few fights before the initial retirement.

He's definitely talking about Mayhem. Not that he wasn't crazy before but the effects have made him way worse. Also Stephan Bonnar seems to not be having too good of a time post career.

There is no way all the drugs have effected Rourke...it's definitely from getting punched in the head.

Max is well slurry already.
I saw the clip from him in High School
part of his speech is just how he is and a mix of the hawaiian style

no doubt his style is conducive to taking a lot of shots to the head in some fights though...they all add up

I remember he was out in London one night and stole model chick from her bf right in front of him
Took her back to his hotel room and ended up kicking her out as wasn’t very good and said something like “take her back, she’s not that good”

Based on an Internet search, what seems to be a more common use of the term “boofing” is to refer to the act of putting alcohol or psychoactive drugs like cocaine or ecstasy into your rectum, otherwise known as “butt chugging” or “plugging” or “alcohol enemas.”

If Joe is so convinced of this and has seen his employer do little to prevent or help athletes treat it, why is he still working for them? If anyone could walk away and be an ambassador to advocate for fighter health, safety, fair pay, and decent treatment, it's him.

Because fighters choose their profession.
