It's hard not to sympathize with the guy, that's a serious long-term setback that happened mid-fight. He deserves a lot of respect just for finishing the fight.

I agree and stuff like that happen in nearly all of his fights. He is one of the toughest guys around and one of my favorite mma fighters he just happens to have the most ineffective skillset ever.

He broke his foot doing that stupid calf kick that ufc people try to do which is flat out the easiest defendable strike in combat sports - the guy on the receiving end just needs to do the slightest turn of his leg and it catches the kick on his shin. Also I believe Nate had a slightly different stance in this fight so it's not like there wasn't a bullprint to beat him before he made that adjustment.

Didn't he injure his hand in the fight prior to this one?
It's like his durability or resilience to injury cannot keep up with the demands of his style.
I really have no working knowledge of calf kicks, to me, leg kicks are something one does as part of an overall strategy of attrition or what one does once or twice to convince someone there are better things to do than fighting.

It’s apparently very effective and can be damaging but would have to ask Leigh @Leigh or ECC170 @ECC170 or NHBStriker @NHBStriker or @Rhino ?

geez that'll do it
reminds me of this movie and the whole break their hand on top of your head part
Gladiator was such a great movie.

The two take aways I remember from this movie in the 90's was faking an injury so your opponent thinks you're really injured and won't throw a punch with the supposed injured hand. The other take away was using the top of one's head to block/absorb punches that often times would break someone's hand.

When Nick Diaz started doing that against....I think it was Anderson?....I immediately thought back to this movie.

Calf kicks can really fucking hurt. WAY more than you'd think. Leg kicks in general can cripple people, they just aren't used much in MMA because wrestling dominates.
Barboza isn’t scared to throw kicks, but then again I think his are apparently looking to break ribs or destroy the liver, but get your point

McGregor made the mistake in Diaz 1 and got taken down....and though he swept Diaz, it made him tired as fuck

Have to wonder if the fight would have played out differently if Pettis would have been able to continue throwing kicks.
honestly it does make sense, even in the wrestling I think it made a difference

I mean Im sure nate has improved his wrestling, but pettis getting taken down by diaz multiple times? Pettis always had excellent wrestling. It was weird to see nate just pulling pettis down at will

(...) Pettis always had excellent wrestling.
Where you get that from? He's always had awful wrestling which is the main thing that kept him from being more successful throughout his career. He also has bad gameplans, footwork that keeps him trapped against the cage, striking defense that gets him clipped everytime, etc. Fun fighter though.

Also nobody asked my opinion but calf kicks are a stupid technique. I wouldn't argue it doesn't hurt but other spots certainly hurt more and the chance of getting checked - if set up properly - are much slimmer

neutralized the wrestling of shane roller, chiesa (blocked the takedowns to hurt chiesa on the feet, leading to the sub later), henderson, melendez, trained with askren for a long time, how is he an awful wrestler?

If anything, pettis willingly stayed on his back many times to try to sub the guy on top without trying to get up (clay guida fight comes to mind)

He loses due to awful gameplanning and backing up all the time instead of trying to actually utilize his underrated wrestling and go for takedowns himself, similar to rampage

If you're getting taken down by diaz several times, something is off, and we found out that it was his broken foot

LMAO I love that movie but I don’t remember him flying out of the ring quite like that! What a wallop on Brian Dennehy!
