Isn’t the cage a little outdated?

why don’t they just put these guys in a glass octagon so everyone can see perfectly. There won’t be anything in the way for spectators.

Give the ref a towel to wipe any sweat marks or blood off the glass so viewing is always good.

Dim the lights outside of the cage so there is no glare.

Place lights at the top of the cage that shine on the fighters.

If they don’t want cage grabbing, get rid of the “grabbable” cage.

Thoughts?

grabbing the cage is lame...tired of the cage games
and also the downed knee game

I like the idea you present

As cool as that is, no walls give counter fighters an advantage since they can back up indefinitely and just counter strike.

Also, with a glass cage fighters can still pressure their opponents into a wall for takedowns or dirty boxing
I like the idea of sloped padded walls as a barrier(Yamma)...but it provides poor visibility for fans

would have to lose the fence and raise the seats/keep fighting surface as low as possible

and make the sloped area wider and taller

Frank Shamrock had an event like 15-20 years ago that was a giant concave platform. That was best.

"Cage" is a gimmick.

UFC has too much invested in "the octagon" as part of their brand, including the chain link.
it's not going anywhere until another promotion is more successful with something else.

You’d need 2 refs with all the blood and sweat that would end up on it

You'd have to have someone in the cage with windex chasing every smudge on the glass down.

What reinforces the glass? I'm sure you've seen hockey players smash through the glass. I don't know there's a way to do this without a couple of heavyweights going through the glass onto the floor in a bloody mess.

I have seen MMA done in a lot of different venues, and thus far I think a cage is the most balanced between fan friendliness and functionality.

ha, dammit, nice one. though I was very disappointed to see how irresponsible the ref was. the guy was out on his feet! too damn obvious that the fight was over. hello, secondary concussion.

Rio heroes had the plexiglass walls and I would've used those to run my opponents heads into and smash their fkn skulls..

I've been thinking about this casually for some time, as the best environment is one that simulates infinite space with no useful objects (like the cage wall) while still effectively restricting the action to a relatively small area, so as to avoid the possibility of running. It's not an easy question to answer.

Perhaps a defined area with a penalty for stepping out of bounds or, through one's actions, causing another person to be pushed or fall out of it, like with a takedown, for example.

The biggest problem, imho, is that the cage limits the ability of BJJ fighters to make proper use of their skills, since so many takedowns either happen on the fence or end up near the fence upon completion.

Fixing this problem may necessitate the construction of arenas dedicated solely to fighting. Like a modified Tennis stadium with a fighting area in the middle with a square footage somewhere around 4 or 5 cages worth and with the lower and higher stands meeting in the middle in terms of their height with respect to the fighting area.

Yeah no thanks.the plexi would look like shit by the second fight.there is nithing like going to hockey in the spring when the glass is all marked up and smudged.unless they windex the whole thing in between fights it will be no better than a cage and much harder with no give.might as well just have no cage and do it on an open mat

it would be an unprecedented opportunity to move up from Motel 6 to Windex as the primary in-cage sponsor

Octagon with barbed wire all over the fence would certainly make it entertaining

We’d see a lot of action in the middle of the cage

I like this, but in reality infinite space makes a fight less realistic rather than more. There are few battles on fields since the 20th century and very few hand to hand combat opportunities in any circumstance that don't have some obstruction a person is likely to run into. The cage is kind of a nod to that. Maybe in the future we'll get apartment fights where they just drop a 360 camera in a building and we'll watch people brawl their way through multiple hallways Daredevil style.
