As much as I detest BJJ politics and drama, I just left the gym I had been training at for 10 years to join the Alliance academy here. It sucked because I have been friends with the owner of the school for over a decade (the owner is not involved with BJJ, he runs the karate programs), and I like my former instructor, but there were training issues that made it clear to me that I needed to move on to reach my
potential. It will be a new experience being the new guy on the mat when I start at Alliance, although I know and have competed against some of the guys over there and know the head instructor fairly well.

Damn brotha, that's crazy.... You know what, at the end of the day, you gotta go to where the environment suits you and your needs best. The funny thing is very rarely do any practitioners start and finish their journey at one school/academy/team/affiliation.... I started in judo/sambo in NYC, then with Din Thomas in Orlando, William Bittencourt/de la Riva in Orlando, Rigan Machado in LA, and Marcio Simas Gracie Barra, all before I met my coach Jon and Royce going on 14 years ago, and I'll still go cross train at other gyms, when I'm looking to work against an expert in a certain area... You gotta find what works for you and not feel bad. This isn't old school Brazil where specific Barrios flew a flag and fought other Barrios with different flags, train where you want guilt free.

Thanks. Up until fairly recently, I expected that I would be under my prior association forever. I guess things change. Stuff like this is why I am so quick to cringe when I see people getting association logos tattooed on them.

Not only that, think about how many schools/academies change their affiliation because they don't want to pay the dues.... I knew of this one gym here in Florida, where every two years they were at tournaments under a different affiliation.... Think about those guys.

Truth is, BJJ is for everyone, I get having customer loyalty, and the loyalty to your gym out of respect, but the way the economy works, people relocate for work, or schools close, it's hard to have that lifelong dedication to one gym..... Or if one day you decide to open a school Doc, DJL BJJ... Some main school owners get mad at that kind of thing... But at the end of the day, it's your journey, your needs, your life... Do what's best for you.

If you like your former instructor, and were friends with him, what kind of 'training issues' made you leave?

I have been training slightly longer than my instructor, and for the past few years have been spending significantly more time on the mat than him, so I was starting to lead more and more classes while getting less and less input/feedback. The classes where he was there, the level of intensity or rolling was getting higher and higher, such that I frequently found myself defending against full effort onslaughts from new students who are 50 pounds heavier and 20 years younger than me. Sometimes fun, but injuries are starting to stack up. Since my instructor is 15 years younger, and a 230lb former college athlete who has been leading the program since he was a blue belt, he understandably has a hard time showing details that can help make techniques work when you are not part Hulk. Great guy, but not the best instructor to get me from 4 stripe purple to black IMO.

Sucks man. I've been out for a couple years, but when I get back in I'll be in a similar boat. I feel for you, buddy. I really do.

I train everywhere. But I'm not out there trying to earn shiny pieces of pot-metal, so that helps.

and i'm nowhere near as big of an asshole IRL as I am in text.
well...not really near.

It happens. Sometimes it's for the best.

My gym cancelled all their weekday morning classes. Only night classes doesn't fit my current schedule so I'm hunting for a new place which isn't looking good given my geographics.

Hope the move works out for you!
