hey man we should talk screenwriting! I’m fascinated by it and story structure in general. As the dude points out, it’s baffling that the character of Rey doesn’t really even have a demonstrable character arc. Simple rules of drama are missing from that Last Jedi script, never mind the mess of disjointed subplots.

How can this happen? I’m genuinely curious how such a massive project was done so badly. It almost looks like it was purposely done badly lol

I’m also amazed that according to what I’ve seen, it seems like they didn’t even write the new trilogy as a whole beforehand. It really sounds like they made the films one at a time, without really knowing exactly where it was going. This to me seems fucking bonkers.

the only logical way to have handled a new Star Wars trilogy I figure would be to have it working perfectly and powerfully and everyone agreeing the whole arc of the 3 new films is awesome with a great ending, and know it well so they could plant all their seeds and payoffs perfectly as they go so it all sings as a single story.

the idea that they didn’t do this just blows my mind. It really looks like they keep just passing the torch for each film and wondering what to do with whatever the previous film set. Totally surreal. How could a powerhouse like Disney ignore such basic 101 of good storytelling? They’ve made like a million films surely they would know this is a reckless crapshoot approach

I honestly am intrigued at this mystery.

Lucas did the prequels badly but the story arc is still all there and it works emotionally. But these new films are just so hack I can’t help but go tinfoil lol

what sort of screenplays did you write? Do you not write anymore? I’ve written my own trilogy, took me almost 20 years of studying the craft and rewriting, I’m just starting to figure out how to begin pitching it

Who knows though, maybe they did write the whole thing and part 3 will bring it all into focus. I’ve speculated some possible story directions where this could be the case, but man it can’t fix so much

just compare how clean the story of Empire Strikes Back is with Last Jedi. A good story just works and feels like a good story. It’s simple and satisfying. Last Jedi was so far from that it’s ridiculous.

Well I should be honest and say I was an aspiring /strugglingscreenwriter at University. Write a few got one made that did some indie festivals and won a prize... While I was abroad. Lol.

I thought I needed more life experience.
Working at the Canadian tire store minimum wage didn't help.
Was considering enrolling in the army a la Oliver Stone. Travel the world and do thousands of pushups in the mud. Lol.

Chose goimg abroad to teach English instead and enjoy some depravity and martial arts.

To this day I always watch movies and TV series with the eye of a screenwriter.
I enjoyed making comedies with some surrealistic
touch. Look up french director Bertrand Blier. A true master.

Great! Good choice not joining the army, lol Crafting a good clean story is a fascinating artform in any medium imo, much harder than it looks. We all think we have a great story but go ahead and start the blueprint and it starts to fall apart very fast. Fix the leaks and its still a rickety mess lol

I never knew you were once a broad.

These gender times, man

Wish me luck!!

I will look up Bertrand Blier

In the last month or so, my son (6) has just now seen the first two Star Wars movies (originals from 1977 and 1980). I plan on watching Return of the Jedi with him soon too. Like many kids, including myself, he loved them and is all about light sabers and Jedi now. It's been kind of fun because he has been very inquisitive and asking lots of questions as he tries to wrap his brain around the story and the characters.

Whatever year Episode 1 came out, I went to see that at the theater with friends and we all left pissed off. Fuck Jar Jar Binks haha. I never watched episodes 2 or 3 after that, and I the only other newer one I have watched is Rouge 1 (which I did enjoy).

For now anyway, I think I will limit my son to watching the original 3 movies. There is plenty there to capture his imagination and for him to enjoy IMO. He can watch the others down the road if he wants to.

It was a bit of a challenge trying to explain to a 6 year old why the movies started at Episode 4, but I am glad I didn't start him on Episode 1. I wanted his first memories of this series to be the original, as that's where the magic is IMO.

Yeah man leave it at that

the prequels were poorly done, but the basic storyline is there and still pretty cool imo.

Rogue One sets up a New Hope well.

I really liked the Solo movie even though everyone trashed on it. Honestly don’t know why. Maybe that was just media perception because it didn’t have a female lead lol

Well holy shit, reading the second book I bought - we are now 2 for 2:

I picked up 2 Star Wars books (out of dozens available), and BOTH of them have references to multi-gender/gender fluidity etc.

Here is the 2nd book:

Here is the creepy gender reference on page 51:

AGAIN - this has NOTHING to do with the story. Just inserted for god knows why. In fact, its about the only thinkg so far in the book that DOESN'T make sense... because the Leia actually embarrasses the character of Casterfo for looking up at these 'scantily clad' people on the upper balcony, implying that they should keep their eyes forward to make a better impression. Yet somehow Leia identifies 'at least 4 different genders' - without looking? How is this done? How can you identify at least 4 different genders from far away, on a different level, while not looking? What exactly indicates 4 different genders? Can she see their genitals from 1 floor below? It makes zero sense, while the rest of the book is perfectly written with great attention to detail and continuity.

Its a real shame because so far the book is otherwise really great and a lot of fun. I really don't know it its the author who has some gender issues and insists on putting in these lines (with approval from Disney publishers of course)... or if the author has nothing to do with it and has been coerced by Disney to insert these lines into her otherwise flawless novels.

It's a mystery imo, and a very creepy one at that.

Its well past homo, dude

Disney is advocating 'AT LEAST 4 DIFFERENT GENDERS' and gender fluidity/changes through a single lifetime.

Not to mention putting bare breasts directly in a creatures genital reasons, then having Luke 'milk' them.

This is fucking bizarre imo

I can't even conceive what '4 different genders' could possibly be.
Maybe we'll get to see in Rise of Skywalker, lol
