He had a two night slot here at our improv place in SJ. I considered it but I really don't know enough about him.

I went to see Joey Diaz on a recommendation from someone here and Rogan which worked out great.
well brendan shaub made me not want to be a stand up so he is that bad ...crushing puss bro.

I've considered myself as someone who enjoys making others laugh ever since elementary school and I watch stand up comedies every day.

I've been contemplating at some point in my life trying to do stand up. Anything worth doing is worth doing right so thus far I have what I feel is a great opening joke and I have some other short jokes and short stories that are funny but that's probably only about 5-10 minutes worth of material.

I like how comedians have the "bring back" punchline where early on in a joke they'll have a punchline lets say some joke than ends with purple pussy. Later on somehow incorporate that same punchline as the "bring back" joke as those are always good. I don't have that yet.

Any advice or tips?

My opening joke is original so I don't want to share it here and have it stolen but it's a rape joke. I tried it out on one friend last night and he legit laughed and said...."That's good....that's reeeaaal good".
If I remember correctly from your other thread, you think Amy Schumer’s comedy is funny ....

If that’s the case, I give you a 1/10 chance of succeeding in the comedy game.

Also D241 @D-raw if you have to drink the first time to get up, do your thing, but don't make it a regular thing for a while until you're comfortable. It can turn into a shit show really quick.

Funny story- I went to an open mic on Orange County one time, and a guy got so high before he went up (trying to ease his nerves) that he went on stage and couldn't remember a word of his material. Not a single word. Went up, said hi, never started his bit. Just stood there for (not exaggerating) 3 minutes in complete silence just randomly going "dammit, what was it....." it was one of the most uncomfortable things I have ever watched.
I rarely drink. I go months without drinking. I smoke weed every now and again but that's the extent. Tame/lame.

Great insight Andrewsimar.

I have also heard the advice to pre-record my bit and listen to it and as you said, learn where to cut the fat and what not.

public speaking is some real ass shit

I get nervous being humorous when it gets above 8 or so people(poker table size) at a time
I can be super comfortable in big crowds but sometimes I can be very reclusive.

I have a lot of experience in being around groups of people. In high school I would do things like at house parties make a loud bang like I slammed something and I'd hunch over making loud moans, and when people would come to see what's up, I'd say I smashed my thumb. Then I'd show them a swollen thumb like a cartoon's thumb, except it my my testicle. It was pretty funny, I did that multiple times. I wouldn't do that in a bit though, obviously.

I've had to speak in front of people for work stuff, but I still take into consideration how hard it is. That's why IF I plan on trying this, I will do so in a far away city, not my home town.

I've been told I should give it a go.

But holding court and making people laugh at a party isn't the same thing as being on stage.

I have crazy respect for people who can do it.

The worst thing about stand up is people in a social setting finding out that you're a comic. They always ask for you to tell them one of your jokes and it gets very uncomfortable. Then there's the guys who are intimidated that you think you're funny, so they'll show off to you all night and try to be the funny guy. It generally just ends with them telling you every racist street joke they know. I hated it when my friends would let it slip that I do stand up. I knew the night just got a lot longer and more exhausting.

I could do it,

My mate has.

It’s just a confidence thing, well, and be funny.

If I needed to do it to make money I would. But I don’t need to.

Yeah, unfortunately popularity is king. Comedy clubs are businesses and you get what you can sell.

Doug Stanhope is my favorite comic ever, and he's still in clubs even though he's been doing it at the highest level for over two decades. It's a gruesome business.

Nobody does it to make money. It would be a really stupid idea to try to start doing stand up to make some extra cash. It takes a while to even make 40 bucks for a night of work, and that's after spending time doing it for free and writing.

It's a lot more than confidence and being funny, for the record. I knew a lot of confident shitty comics, and a lot of funny people who were shitty comics. Stand up is a lot more complicated than non-comics think it is, which honestly is frustrating for the comics, and it's why hecklers are so plentiful. There are plenty of hacks in the audience who think they can do it. Almost none of them can.

Can't remember why but I didn't go see Doug when he was here. It's a cool little improv club, it's good fun.
Joey was great, TJ Miller was great. I really enjoy it.
I've seen Eddie Izzard the most but apart from one practice run he's done they've always been in large venues. San Jose Improv is kinda small.

Only just found out you're in the state above me...
Yeah I only know about him via Rogan and people in the mma community, I hadn't ever listened to his podcast but figured it was worth a go.

I’ve got to be honest but I do find Stanhope dated now.

For me the best in the world at the moment, and I get it’s a ridiculous thing to say but I would say if you haven’t seen him check out Frankie Boyle.

I’ve seen him live a few times. I’m seeing him again December 16th but his Netflix shows are worth looking at and also some of his old you tube stuff is well worth seeking out.
