How often do you have to land a plane for unruly passengers? Any crazy stories?
I’ve never had to divert for passengers, but I’ve had a dude get arrested when we arrived at our destination before. He was sitting next to some other guy and he bitch slapped him, hard.(That’s how I worded it in my report too.) I’ve had a bunch kicked off the plane at the gate before departing though. Mostly for being drunk or arguing with the flight attendant, when they yell at her or call her a bitch, they are gone immediately.

Do you fly the same route usually or does it change?
It changes, but I go to the same cities all the time. We probably have around 25-30 cities we go to. Some places I go to more than others though. I hub in and out of Chicago O’Hare and Denver.

Are there specific airports that pilots consider "shit shows", have bad ground crew, or are generally mismanaged?

I have been with my current employer for 20 years. That’s the longest relationship I have ever had, but it’s time to move on. I’m topped out on the pay scale so I’m making a cash run. I’m actually going to take a big pay cut the first year, but after the first year, my pay will be a bit more than I’m making now, and after that, it goes up quite a lot. I’m going from being a big fish in a little pond to a small fish in a lake. I start in the beginning of January. Now I have to learn what all these buttons do.

Is that a space ship?

This is a very typical trip for me. This is next month. I am coming off 4 days of being home and show up in my base of ORD(chicago) at 7:15 am. 3 legs on the 24th, 2 legs on the 25th and 26th, and 3 legs on the last day, done at 11:29am. That’s how I’m spending Christmas. I’ll be in Louisville on Christmas Eve and be up and gone before Wild @Wild even knew I was in town. Then I get 3 days off.

Are there people known as "good" pilots and "bad" pilots. What makes a "bad" pilot. How much flying do you actually have to do and how much of it is automated?

Do you regional airline pilots really make so little?

What's something passengers should know but usually don't?

Do you fly on your own time?

By the time most people make it to the airlines, the ones who can’t fly very well have been weeded out. So good vs. bad at this point is usually due to personality. Most of the guys and girls I fly with have been pretty cool, but there are some assholes everywhere. It’s a lot easier for me to deal with assholes, because I’m the Captain, and I can usually steer a conversation towards shutting the fuck up and just doing our jobs. But it’s more difficult when you’re the First Officer and the Capt is an asshole. You just have to make sure you do your job professionally, and hope they shut up about how miserable their lives are or how much they hate their wife and kids. And then never bid for a trip with them again.

I work the bare minimum that I can, I try to get the maximum time off that I can. I grossed 120k last year. If I tried, I probably could have made 150-160.
Every once in a while, I’ll go up in a small airplane, but I’m not current so I go up with a flight instructor. I’d like to do more of it though.

Oh, actual flying, my current airplane, we hand fly all take offs and landings. After take off, we can turn the auto pilot on at 500 feet, but most people hand fly to around 10,000 feet. On landing, most people click off the auto pilot around 1500 feet or so. When the visibility is really bad, sometimes we have to keep the autopilot on until about 50 feet. On the next plane I will be flying, it has auto-land when the visibility is bad, so that will be weird.
