With top middleweight contender Paulo Costa on the sidelines for the foreseeable future, it’s looking like Israel Adesanya’s first middleweight title defense will be against Yoel ‘Soldier of God’ Romero, as UFC president Dana White revealed earlier this week that the UFC is looking to book the matchup as soon as possible.

“We’re looking at Yoel Romero. (Adesanya) wants that fight. He wants to fight Yoel Romero. Nobody wants to fight Yoel Romero. Nobody’s screaming, ‘I want to fight Yoel Romero.’ He is,” White said in a recent interview with ESPN’s Brett Okamoto (h/t BJPenn.com).

White went on to state the the UFC has a date in mind for the…

Isn't Yoel Romero technically on a two-fight skid? I realize he's still a very relevant fighter, but what the fucking christ?

Having to be on a win streak is just something we invented as being necessary. It's the context of the losses that matter.

Did he arguably win his last two fights against the then champion and the now injured no. 1 contender? Yes.

Is he the highest ranked fighter left? Yes.

Is he the best and most competitive available matchup for Israel? Yes.

Once you realize that, there is nothing controversial about the fight whatsoever.

god fucking dammit! what the hell is going on in this thread
Okay, I'll be incredibly lame and just explain this straight.

So there's the company called "Marvel Comics." They made a number of comics about manly men being manly and tree-shaped alien tentacle monsters. There was also once a struggling bartender and waiter in Los Angeles named Vin Diesel, looking to make it big as an actor, only he wanted to do it on merit and without compromising himself and going gay for pay like so many of his contemporaries. At one point, these two disparate things converged to give the world "Groot."

Much later, UFC Middleweight Champion Israel Adesanya, in an act of brazen cultural appropriation, then used this to mock Yoel Romero's poor English skills. Then this thread was made. Hope this helps.

This may be because I'm getting old, but I feel like in order to get a shot at the champion, you need to be coming off a win unless it was a razor thin loss to the champion. Or at least not be coming off consecutive losses. And is Whittaker is higher ranked if we're literally gonna do it based on pure contender rankings, but that fight would be just as stupid. Adesanya can defend against Cannonier, and Romero can get a title eliminator againt Darren Till or whoever. Would be fine with that.

Had to google to remember.

Silva... and a list of names I had to think hard about.
Shaun Jordan & Ion Cutmesomebananas. Crikey.

mostly my point is that he's lost multiple times to the guys who are being lined up for Jones but because he's now fighting at middleweight that apparently has to be written off and we can only rate him based on beating Silva (via injury), David Branch (not that good) and Jack Hermansson (best one) ... I'm not seeing this legendary run that should get him a title shot, Romero's performance in the Whittaker rematch is better than those 3 wins combined IMO.

Glad there's someone else not suffering from Cannonier amnesia like seemingly the entire MMA community.

He was sub .500 fighter at HW and LHW in the UFC. Ancient Silva, Branch and Hermansson are decent MW wins, but they do not justify a title fight on the back of Cannonier's early losing UFC career.

Romero is the far more proven commodity and the far more interesting fight.

You should put this post in your "UFC 246 is the Worstest Main Event Evar" thread.
