The Astros watched the game on a live feed monitor and when they saw an off speed pitch was called for by the catcher, someone would bang a garbage can so the batter could hear it and know what was coming. Is this where they read the catchers hand signals? Yeah maybe stop doing that. Be like if they had someone in the end zone signalling to the QB who to pass to. Ofc ppl r gona try to see it. Just throw your pitch. Why the catcher have to be involved?
it was more than that. Catchers update their sign strings with the pitcher between innings...sometimes between pitches. That kind of sign-stealing is just part of the game, like when a runner is on 2nd base. The Astros watched the game on TV and when they saw an off speed pitch was called for by the catcher, someone would bang a garbage can so the batter could hear it and know what was coming.
No bang - fast all
Bang - off speed

From all accounts, it was a player-driven scam. The managers and coaches are being punished for letting it happen. It’s shady but I don’t see how I can hold the players that accountable.
What are they supposed to do? Throw their coaches and franchise under the bus mid season. I’m ok with a small suspension but coaches should get lifetime ban.
give anonymous tips to MLB and the media. What are they supposed to do?
Correct.it was more than that. Catchers update their sign strings with the pitcher between innings...sometimes between pitches. That kind of sign-stealing is just part of the game, like when a runner is on 2nd base.
What the Astros did was setup cameras to video the signs from center field, and then analyzed the signs in real time to decipher the sign strings - then they called down to the dugout to signal pitches. They were cheating.
Thanks. I don't rly have a problem w it. Does the catcher rly need to call pitches? Can't the pitcher throw what he wants? The Astros watched the game on a live feed TV and when they saw an off speed pitch was called for by the catcher, someone would bang a garbage can so the batter could hear it and know what was coming.
No bang - fast ball
Bang - off speed

Haha. No.Thanks. I don't rly have a problem w it. Does the catcher rly need to call pitches? Can't the pitcher throw what he wants?
it's the pitcher that's calling the pitches. The catcher is running through signs, based on how they decided to pitch this batter. When the pitcher sees the sign for the pitch he wants, he starts his delivery and the catcher sets up for the pitch.Thanks. I don't rly have a problem w it. Does the catcher rly need to call pitches? i was our little league catcher, for no reason other than I was willing to be a human backstop...learning to catch is basically just squatting down and taking abuse.Haha. No.
The catcher would have little chance to catch the ball if he didn't know what was coming. It's comical when a catcher gets "crossed up" on a pitch (expecting fastball, gets a slider or curve ot vice versa) - the ball typically ends up at the backstop.
Major league pitchers throw hard, and their pitches have crazy movement.
Not always the caseit's the pitcher that's calling the pitches. The catcher is running through signs, based on how they decided to pitch this batter. When the pitcher sees the sign for the pitch he wants, he starts his delivery and the catcher sets up for the pitch.
Not necessarily.it's the pitcher that's calling the pitches. The catcher is running through signs, based on how they decided to pitch this batter. When the pitcher sees the sign for the pitch he wants, he starts his delivery and the catcher sets up for the pitch.
I was both a pitcher and a catcher throughout my entire baseball career. No homo. I also played short and 3rd.i was our little league catcher, for no reason other than I was willing to be a human backstop...learning to catch is basically just squatting down and taking abuse.
now read that last phrase in a flagrant and flaming voice.
started at 2nd, moved to catcher, finished at 1st base.I was both a pitcher and a catcher throughout my entire baseball career. No homo. I also played short and 3rd.
I loved playing catcher. In more advanced leagues, catchers are typically the smartest player on the field. There's a reason so many managers are former catchers.started at 2nd, moved to catcher, finished at 1st base.
my flexibility and baseball IQ increased. Then I got out of that stupid hot gear
in Little League, was 1st baseman that called the infield - that's why I moved. My dad was the coach, and a former all-state/Minor League catcher, LoL.I loved playing catcher. Plus every now and then you got to get in a collision. I fucking loved plays at the plate.
Yeah. I was good at that too.best part of catcher was talking shit to the batters...especially as we got older.
