Donald Cerrone
made it clear prior to UFC 246 that he would never take a dive in a fight. Given the result of his bout with Conor McGregor, though, he’s been forced to go on the defensive post-fight, too.

Cerrone (36-14 MMA, 23-11 UFC) came up short in arguably the biggest moment of his career earlier this month when he suffered a 40-second TKO loss to McGregor (22-4 MMA, 10-2 UFC) in the anticipated UFC 246 headliner in Las Vegas. The fight was short, but “Cowboy” took a fair share of damage. He nose and orbital bone were both damaged from the combination of shoulder strikes, a head kick and the famous left hand for which “The Notorious” is so well known.

It took a matter of seconds after Cerrone was beat for observers to question the legitimacy of his loss. ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith said Cerrone folded “like a cheap tent,” and the rhetoric from fans online was even worse. There hasn’t been much public interaction from Cerrone since the fight, but on Thursday he dug into his social media comments and issued responses to some outspoken followers (via Instagram):

I wouldn't go as far as dive but even beforehand it appeared (to me) that Cowboy's heart wasn't in this fight. After being dropped he was given time to do something, anything, he balled up and waited for the stoppage. While fans have no right to demand a fighter with a serious injury continues to fight, Cerrone has proven to be extremely game in nearly all of his previous matches making his immediate concession of defeat here look out of place.

Wasnt his face already broke at that point?

Yes and in his last fight he looked like the Elephant Man yet fought through to the bell and pleaded against the stoppage.

As I stated we have no right to demand he continue but as bad ass as he's proven to be in the past it was surprising to see him concede the loss so quickly regardless.

I hate that the title of these articles say “fans.” It should say “haters.” Say what you will about Donald, but the man has integrity.

So because his face didnt look broken you expect him to continue? I'm sure a broken orbital and broken jaw hurts worse than a black eye

It wasn't a dive . It was a mismatch and everyone knew it ahead of time . It is Conor though so it's a dive, right?

The guy took a lot of damage in 40 seconds, hard shoulder strikes, knees , punches , a headkick. That would be the strangest dive ever . "Hey, to make this look convincing I'm going to go out there and get beat up with hardly any resistance in 40 seconds . So ,just beat the ever living shit out of me in that period of time. If you can ,try to break my face a little bit "

Dr stoppage between rounds is different than the ref stopping the fight due to turtling. It's weird to see Cowboy get this criticism instead of people talking about how good Conor looked.

A broken face is a broken face and not everyone prepares for that in advance like Nick Diaz gnomesayin'?

I would believe he already had an injury and didn't pull out because it was his big chance for $$$. But we have seen Cowboy stopped right away before - and you could tell it was going to happen because he looked sick before the fight. Now I can't even remember who his opponent was, but I remember that pretty clearly.

Conor fought Cowboy like he knew he was fighting a slow-starter who was going to try and clinch him up early.
Conor fought Aldo like he knew he was fighting a dynamic striker who had success getting off first.

but everybody else who was a fan of MMA knew those things to. People just under-estimated his ability to capitalize on that knowledge.

That is how many people cope with him winning

It's a strange one. I've never heard anything ever before about cowboy throwing a fight, then suddenly there were rumours going around before this fight that cowboy was going to take a dive.
Cerrone fires back at claims he’s being paid to ‘take a dive’
And then the fight went down like that.
Who knows,I didn't think he threw it, but he did fold quickly.
it was only suspect because he was talking about not taking Conor down as the fans wanted to see a standup war

and he's repeatedly said he doesn't care if he wins or loses he just wants to compete, it's a controversial mentality

I read into that as he was already mentally defeated, he knew he had no chance to take Conor down and knew he was going to lose.

He just seemed like he was happy to be there for the big payday. There was nothing about his demeanor that suggested he even wanted to win. Heck the guy was even defending Conor during the press conference. Cowboy seemed to just show up for the show but not the fight.

To be fair...Cowboy has done that in all of his recent fights...he doesn't seem to have that fire. He was too nice to both Justin and Tony....even in defeat

He needs to take a year off and stop fighting so much. Maybe it will recharge him and give him that fire again. His brain definitely could use a break.

Fans my bollocks, cunts more like.

Cowboy was beat before he got in there, it was a ready up for McGregor, fair enough.

I thought he might have put up more of a fight but he head butted McGregors knee badly after ducking that over extended left, that fucked him up big style.

The rest of the fight is a hungry cunt with something to prove taking advantage of a rocked shop worn Cowboy.

If the UFC hadn't rolled the dump truck full of dollars in front of him he probably wouldn't have fought at all, he needed more time off to recover after 2 brutal fights in a row.

We saw Stipe KO'd by Cormier for a similar reason, fair enough it was a shot he didn't see coming but the Ngannou fight took its toll on his durability, which was why he was able to absorb a fuck load more damage in the rematch.
