I was just reading about Bongo Joe, pretty fascinating.

While some may think of him only as a novelty, Bongo Joe (aka George Coleman) had a long, illustrious career, especially for a self-taught street musician who played mainly for free. Born George Coleman in Haines City, FL, on November 28, 1923, he had a rough life from the beginning. His father died before he was born and his mother passed away when he was seven, leaving siblings and neighbors to look after him. Upon graduation from high school, Coleman began a 30-year musical career that found him playing 15 years on Seawall Boulevard in Galveston and another 15 in San Antonio, occasionally traveling anywhere between. Coleman had played with numerous musicians, including Sammy Davis, Jr. and Dizzy Gillespie, and played for Muhammad Ali, President John F. Kennedy in Fort Worth (the night before he was assassinated), and Gerald Ford during his 1976 presidential campaign. He also played private exclusive parties at homes and country clubs. While he was a proficient piano player, Coleman preferred percussion because it was easier to play on the streets, hence the moniker Bongo Joe. He rode a motorbike, towing his equipment: 55-gallon oil drums, mallets made of hammer handles, and a small public-address system. No matter where he was, Bongo Joe was a disciplined performer playing practically every night without fail. Coleman died on December 19, 1999, due to diabetes and kidney disease. Only one album by Bongo Joe was recorded, released by Arhoolie Records in 1968.

I thought we were just doing songs with Texas in the title.

If it's artists from Texas, you best get some more Waylon in here with a quickness.

I love that Waymore clip of him melting Jessi's heart.

Saw him perform at a Lollapalooza a long time ago. So glad I got that opportunity.
I think that is my favorite Waylon clip/vid of all time. So damn good.

That's awesome you got to see him live, I never had the chance. Must've been in the late 90s?

This is one of my favorite Waylon stories:

"Reshen also booked Jennings and his band into clubs not known for country music, like Max's Kansas City in New York City. In the CMT episode of Inside Fame about his life, Jennings recalled that he told the jaded rock audience he was from Nashville and would be playing country music, adding "We sure hope you like it, but if you don't like it you better keep your mouth shut, 'cause we will kick your ass." When met with the audience's reply of "Who the hell are you?", Jennings replied: "I'm Waylon goddamn Jennings."

At the Lollapalooza he wasn't treated too well. People were throwing shit at him even though he was killing it. He said "Fuck this shit" over the mic and left the stage. Not many country fans there I guess.

James Hetfield came out and cussed everyone out.

Then Waylon came back out said "Maybe you idiots will like this one" and played the Dukes of Hazzard them and everyone went nuts.

That's hard for me to imagine him being treated poorly so late into his amazing career, what a bunch of dimwits. He's a legend in my eyes, and I would have been honored to be there. Cool that Hetfield showed his respect like that, he knew what was up. And lol at the "maybe you idiots..." part. Classic Waylon!

I just did and it’s damn good. The face doesn’t really match the voice. I’m trying to watch Shot Caller and I keep getting side tracked with these songs.
If you liked the first one, there is a second Tom Rush tune at the top of Page 4, and you may like that one also (another Texas themed tune, Galveston Flood).

Tom was a bit underappreciated in my opinion, but he has some really great tunes. A number of years ago now, but late in his career, he covered the classic song Drift Away that Dobie Gray made famous. This isn't a Texas tune, but to keep this thread on theme, here is a little tidbit about Tom:

His main guitar for most of his career was a mid-60s model Epiphone "Texan" model. These were great guitars, and I think they quit making them in the early 70s. He made them sound wonderful.

You know, I gotta say that I was initially a bit disappointed. I thought for sure that our most prominent Texan and admin Splinty @Splinty was going to drop some tunes in here.

But upon further research, I found out that Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus don’t have any songs about Texas :D
