I'm always working and drilling something.... Either attacks, defense, sweeps, whatever..... So I'm asking all you other practitioners here, what have you been drilling/practicing lately?

Half guard sweeps for my "A" game, and the Josh Hayden 80/20 stuff to start getting leg locks working for me

I'm way out of practice and have had trouble finding consistent sparring partners for a while now, but I have been working mount, top and bottom.

I'm trying to put together a series of gi-focused take downs with lots of 2 on 1 and rolls. Just tried a new practice partner for Saturday morning drilling and he's bigger, stronger, faster and moves better than me. Tomorrow is supposed to be ground work with a different guy but I've forgotten so much that I don't know where to start.

That's awesome, I usually go from half to half butterfly to X entry, then start looking for leg locks or sweeps.... I'm working on Josh's stuff to, he's so slick to watch live, I'm going to get him to do a thing in January at my gym.

Where do you live/train? I know a lot of great schools in the US, and some overseas.... I just taught a seminar in Dallas, all I covered was mount and side control defense per their request. The basics are always great to drill.

That is exactly the series that I am trying to develop along with single leg x and DLR. a couple of the better guys I train with play a lot of half, so between them and MGInAction I have plenty of guidance.

Which gym are you with in SC again?

I never liked playing deep half, maybe it's because of my height and size. I always preferred half guard frame (knee shield) into a guard recovery, or like I mentioned before into half butterfly to X.

Pitch Black MMA/Upstate Karate in Simpsonville. The gym Wonderboy and his dad Ray Thompson run. We are a RCJ Machado affiliate, Carlos Machado is married to Ray's oldest daughter, so we get to see him pretty frequently here.

Bumping this from December.... What are we all working on now? I've had a few newer students ask me to cover rear naked choke defense... They saw the fights on Saturday and didn't know what to do in that spot....... Also I've been covering triangle defense for our youth competition team.

Personally, I've been drilling guard passing a ton, and a lot of Judo and Sambo takedowns lately.

What about you all?

Reestablishing guard from opponent in side control.

Triangle from guard.

Basics, but I'm tall and keep wasting all my length with lack of technique. Fixing that.

Nice.... Hip movement is the key to it all. For that cross side guard recovery, remember to be on your side, have a strong underhook or frame, keep your head back so as not to get choked.

Throw those hips high for you triangles... I'm long legged too, so I remember feeling that pain of wasting my height.

I may start doing TMMAC training technique videos for this forum... Invite some top guys to make an appearance too, maybe do a BJJ Q&A thing with them..... Splinty I'll hit you up on this idea

Splinty @Splinty... I just taught a no gi class this morning, and had no real plan of what to teach, I asked the students what they wanted to cover, they asked for cross side guard recovery... I laughed

Darqnezz @Darqnezz in my evening gi class I am doing all knee on belly attacks... One of my favorite positions to attack, so many great attacks from there

Reestablishing guard

Hip escapes

The lockdown and just being able to keep a guy from slicing right through my half.

I've also been looking for single legs off my butt from butterfly guard or shooting underneath for a leg if they give me the opportunity, but I'm not really sure if the single leg thing is smart, it has worked for me though.

So what are you guys working on now? What improvements have you made in the last round of things you were working on?

Also, any promotions for any of you? Stripes or new belts? Brag a little here if you've earned it..... Or if anyone has competed and won anything, let us know.

It has only been about two weeks since I last updated, but since then I've gotten obsessed with the lockdown and sweeping from that position. Half-bottom has always been the weakest part of my game and now it is my strongest. I have just been pulling half-guard and trying to make it something I can really rely on in the future. I've watched a few hours of video on it online honestly and I'm pretty obsessed.

A lot of the time when they realize I've gotten too deep into the sweep and they can't stop it, they'll grab my neck and go for a guillotine in the transition, which doesn't work because I'm in top-half or side control by that point with a tough neck. But I want to learn the von flue choke because it seems to be a common position I end up in whenever I go for that sweep.

I've also been getting much better learning the positions I'm safe in and where I'm not.

I'd like to enter a competition in 3-5 months, even though I know I'll be going against a bunch of white belt spazzes most likely. But I really want to compete and challenge myself to get technical enough to handle them. I'm training 6-8 sessions a week. I just think it would be good experience so that once I start competing at a higher level I will already have some of those nerves worked out. The reason I'm bringing this up is I have a question. When competing in a grappling tournament, am I allowed to start from my back? Or do I have to play the takedown game?

I really suggest to wait awhile on the tournaments.... Didn't you only start training like a month ago? There's so much you need to work on, so many fundamentals and basics that unless you're BJ Penn, it's not going to be second nature to you. Watching videos is great, but that can't be what makes you obsessed with the art. You're trying to fast track it, and this art is a marathon, not a sprint.

All tournaments start from standing, you can pull guard after engaging with your opponent, but again.... In real time against a guy who is going Mach 10, it quite often doesn't play out like you think it will unless you practice it ad nauseum. Working on your wrestling and judo game is super important (especially the defense to takedown attepmts), you can find yourself in a bad spot from the jump. Work on guard recovery, side control defense, getting back to your feet.... Work your cardio and conditioning for it too (we've had Ironman competitors come in and train, and after 3 minutes tell us that they can barely breathe, and feel like they've never trained or exercised a day in their lives).

I'm not telling you this to kill your enthusiasm, I'm telling you this to protect you from getting hurt... Tournaments will be there, but focus on the overall game before doing them. Then I suggest to go to a few as an observer with the rest of your guys, ask Danny when he's doing another event and volunteer to work it..... Being involved in the tournament culture will give you a better idea what the level of competition you'll face is, and the overall energy of the day is. (I've seen countless newbies pass out, or throw up due to nerves and being overwhelmed by it all).

After 16 years of training, and 4 years of running a national tournament, that's my advice, take it for what it's worth.
