When UFC heavyweight Frank Mir locks in a submission, he rarely lets go unless the fight is over. He hopes UFC Fight Night 85 opponent Mark Hunt remembers that fact.

In terms of grappling credentials, the former UFC champion is an all-timer. He’s the only fighter to break two limbs inside the octagon and has used seven different finishing techniques to score eight career UFC submission victories.

“I’ve worked a lot of leg attacks,” Mir, who’s ranked No. 12 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkieMMA heavyweight rankings (Hunt is No. 11), told MMAjunkie Radio. “I love leg locks and heel hooks and kneebars. They’re complex and hard to avoid. I feel like if we get down to the ground, defending his legs is going to be very difficult, especially because his main concern is getting up – not worrying about his feet.

“I have the hip drive that when I grab something, it’s not going to be uncomfortable. He’s going to have to make the decision of it he wants to continue fighting or go ahead and lose that fight. When I say continue fighting, I mean if he taps, he can continue on (with his career). Kneebars and heel hooks at his age could take him out of competition for an extremely long time.”

Mir better hope he can get it to the ground and tap him out or grind out a decision, because if not he might just end up waking up wondering what happened.

This is one of the few instances where if the fighter were to shoot early and often, wall n stall, lay n pray, head in the crotch, get on his bicycle, you name it, I would not blame him.

Everyone gets a free pass for not wanting to go toe to toe with mark hunt.

For some reason I really dislike Mir, and really love Hunt. That being said, Mark best not be on the ground.

I just switched my pick to Mir and bet him, thanks to all y'all's comments.

Cardio: about the same (1.5 rounds and both guys will be gassed). If there's any significant wrestling, both guys will be gassed by the end of the 1st.

Mir's knees: still capable of hitting a fast-enough single leg. He did it twice to Andrei.

Hunt's chin: not what it used to be

Hunt's way to win: KO, only (good possibility)

Mir's: lucky punch (Hunt's chin is human, now), wall & stall, sub from top or bottom.

Have to agree with Tiiimmmaaayyy @Tiiimmmaaayyy that this is pretty much a coin flip...imo it's probably 40/60 that Hunt gets a KO without getting stopped before he can.

This is a fight I love but hate at the same time

it'll be great to see them both fighting, but i don't want either guy to get a loss at this stage of their careers

Serious answer (srsly): he's probably trying to make Hunt hesitate and increase the likelihood of him overreacting to feints. All it takes to get caught with a good one is a little hesitation, or a little over- or under- reaction.

ya possibly.. hunt usually doesn't throw a lot of high kicks.. i think he is quicker than mir hand speed and movement wise.. *crosses fingers* if he shows up in decent shape that is.. lol.

Mirs boxing has come a long ways over the last few years.

I like him in this fight but wouldn't bet on it. Hunt hits very hard and mirs chin is too suspect.

Mir needs to take this too the ground. If he gets caught with something, buckles a bit hunto is gonna walk off and not follow him to the ground for a finish.

Looking at the Werdum fight for reference, Hunts fight IQ is as strong as ever. Hunto was way out of shape for that one, Werdum had better hands than previously. Fuck horizontal dancing when you don't need to.

I've got butterflies in my ball bags.

Unfortunately, when you get past the prelims you are going to have to answer for it. Someone has to lose and we don't want to watch either fight an up and comer which would be dismissed as a pointless fight.

I like both guys, but I've got a real soft spot for Mir, given what he's overcome to get where he's at. I'd like to see him get the W with a beautiful submission, not break anything of Hunt's, and call it a career.

Hunt should then get a stand and wang type of opponent, hit one last walk off KO, then head back to New Zealand and wait to be kidnapped by his creepy ass stalker who's mad because he doesn't get to see Mark shirtless, sweaty, and rolling around with other shirtless, sweaty guys anymore. At which point Hunt will make a dramatic escape and end up writing a book about the whole ordeal. After a huge media tour for the book, I'm talking Today, Ellen, The Tonight Show, etc, the book will then become a movie that gives Dwayne Johnson his first Best Actor Oscar, for his moving portrayal of a man who was cornered and did what he had to do to survive.

You know, I was just rambling when I typed that post out, but now that I've revisited that stalker story, I'm kinda scared for Mark.... That's some creepy shit...
