They both have changed since that fight, so those changes will be what is significant in this fight. Will Jon's extra muscle mass help him, or will it hinder him (ala Conor vs Diaz)? Also, does Cormier have a different approach and gameplan if he can't get the takedown? He gassed in the first fight, in my opinion, because he spent too much energy trying to keep pace with Jones.

Also, will Jones suffer any ill effects from his extended layoff? He's always been a pretty active fighter, so will he suffer from any ring rust?

In my opinion, DC will not have a better chance to beat Jon. Jon's coming off a really long layoff, and is fighting with a new body. He's not used to carrying all that extra muscle in a fight. With those variables, and the fact that DC has been pretty active and has a confidence boost from winning and defending the title, I actually think I'm picking DC by decision.

Yep, I talked myself into it. DC remains the champ.

(...) i felt it was much more competitive than i have seen some give DC credit for.
...and much less competitive than everybody thought it would be.

that was probably the best mma credentials that's ever been in a cage together. beating DC at wrestling cemented Pre Hit'n'Run Jones as the GOAT for me. if he comes back worse, it will just make the legend grow. I don't think he will though. that layoff is no longer than a lot of fighters take without being prosecuted and stripped of their title.

Err'body? That's not accurate. I didn't, for example.

yes obviously not "everybody" but the general consensus was that DC was going to give Jones the worst dog fight of his life. and by the 4th round Jones had him looking like he didn't even want to fight anymore.

Gotcha. I'm not good at discerning literal from figurative sometimes.

I was quite dubious DC was going to give him his biggest test (no matter how much i wanted it). My reasoning was that i felt a 12 inch reach advantage is significant with a great MMA Muay Thai practitioner like JJ.

I would really like to see someone effectively attack Jones' legs. I'm curious as to how that might play out.

I have a hard time seeing what DC can do differently enough to get the W. If he can figure out a way to neutralize those knees to the body Jones was landing, that'd be a grea start, those knees made me cringe. It's possible that the added muscle won't help Jones I guess. I'm a DC fan, have been since Strikeforce, I'd like to be more optimistic ahout his chances but I'm not seeing it

More muscle doesn't necessarily mean better. Might be stronger but might hinder his cardio. More muscle more oxygen is used. That said I think jones wins, but it will be closer than the last fight.

All three judges gave DC one round.

I was there live but couldn't see as much as I wanted, watched a few days later and realized I missed a lot. I'll have to rewatch but I recall me thinking DC won a round as well and was more competitive than lots of people claim.

I think I'll place a little $$$ on DC just in case.

Just rewatched, thanks for posting! Here's my quick breakdown of how it went in my opinion:

Jones came out really strong in that first round with a wide variety of strong strikes that kept Cormier at bay and did damage although Cormier landed some shots though as well. Jones definitely won the first though.

The second was Cormier's best round of the fight by far. I would possibly give him that round but Jones did some damage and maybe even a bit more damage than Cormier but had a bit less aggression throughout the round.

The third was a close round as well, but was the beginning of the end for Cormier as Jones landed some big strikes, especially to the body that seemed to really drain the life out of Cormier. Jones took that round but not by a wide margin.

The fourth was all Jones. Big takedowns and solid strikes, nothing too crazy but inflicted damage, drained Cormier's energy and completely controlled the round.

The fifth was pretty uneventful, Jones controlled most of it and landed some solid, damaging shots. Cormier spent the final four minutes of the round only trying to get a takedown just to say that he took him down rather than trying anything to win the actual fight. Jones took the fifth pretty easily as well.

Anyways, a good fight - Jones was on point throughout and Cormier had some good moments. Should be a good fight the second time around.

DC's best shot might be to do something Jones hasn't seen. DC usually uses the left to either throw a light hook from the outside to advance forward, hold his opponent inside, or set up the right. Rewatched the first 3 rounds, haven't watched the Gus fight since it happened but that is how I remember him doing it then too. Maybe trying to do a Smokin' Joe Frazier impression on the inside & load up with a few left hooks might be the key. That could also go real bad for him. Dunno, my $ will be on Jones, but I'll still be throwing out hi-fives if DC wins
