He is clearly joking. If you listen to his full statement, he presents his argument quite well IMHO. I disagree with him but I liked hearing his argument.

Some highlights (paraphrased and consider that he is gay):
"This is something I should really enjoy; you have two hot naked guys trying to force each other into submission."

"I'm a tennis guy..." "...in tennis, one of you serves and the other player returns the ball. I prefer to serve."

"These guys don't get ahead. The put their bodies through this for our entertainment. The people who get ahead are the ones behind it, making money off them and from gambling."

"There are some things I'd like to see at Madison Square Garden but I can't."

It never ceases to amaze me though, how people dislike something that they know nothing about.

I don't like hockey. It's not for me. But before I decided this, I had a fundamental knowledge of the sport and had watched several games on tv and a couple of semi-pro games live.

I'm really unsettled by the fact that an elected official voted on something without doing any real research. This guy talks like one of those old boxing fans that's watched 2-3 minutes of an MMA fight and didn't understand it, so he then goes around blasting it. Also, what's with all the homophobic slurs? MMA fighters wear the same thing boxers do, minus shoes. Do boxers get called gay? No. It can't be the ground game, because amateur wrestlers roll around on the ground too, in skin tight singlets, and they don't gay bashed.

The only answer is ignorance and fear. People lash out at things that they don't understand. Especially if whatever they don't understand also causes fear. That's why boxing guys lash out at MMA so much. They fear the sport that's taking over their sport. Most MMA fans and fighters are boxing fans also. Most boxing fans and boxers hate MMA because they don't understand it and because their sport is losing the younger generation of fans to MMA.

As far as our sport has come, this type of ignorance just amazes me.

What about his statement did you dislike? The homosexual comments were self depreciating, because he's gay, and said in humour. I didn't really think they were homophobic.

He said he doesn't know if video games inspire violence and he doesn't know if watching MMA inspires violence either. He voted no because he doesn't want to encourage people to smash themselves and they can do it in NJ or other places if they have to.

I disagree with him because I believe in freedom of choice but I do understand his point.

The homophobic statement wasn't directed at him. As you stated, he said it in jest.

My issue is that he said it in jest because that's usually what people throw out when they don't like MMA. I see his reasoning for voting against it, but I'm still amazed at the lack of information he used to make that judgment. Boxing, which is legal in NY, is way more likely to "smash someone's head" than MMA. The fact that he's not aware of that fact and the numbers that support it is what's disconcerting.

Sorry, I should have been more specific about my issues with what he said. I went on a rant about the general narrative that's spilled by ant-MMA politicians and other figures without stating what I was ranting about. My apologies.

No worries. He did mention football and boxing too and didn't like what they did to athletes.
