Lol @ reporter

That's the man right there!

Kinda crazy when you think about this, but Mauro has called some of the greatest MMA fights n history (PRIDE & SF amongst others), along with some absolutely epic kickboxing fights (GLORY), andddd he is also Showtime's lead guy for all their boxing - including Mayweather fights.

He will be the lead commentator for Mayweather vs Pacquiao. This same guy has been the lead commentator for Fedor vs CroCop and other historic all time great battles.

Has anyone else ever covered all three sports at the highest level? I can't think of anyone who has. It's amazing when you think about it. PLUS, he does New Japan Pro Wrestling these days, which is also the best pro wrestling out there.

Mauro is literally at the forefront of the most elite, top of the line ring sports - all of them - on commentary. That's a great accomplishment, man.

We really need to get him on here for a Q&A. Imagine the stories he must have?

Really crazy to think about it.. he's called some of the greatest fights in ALL combat sports, equally as knowledgeable about each one. People used to hate on him, but I have nothing but respect for the guy. Huge fan of his. He's doing my dream job - I'd KILL to get paid to commentate the best fights in the world at the highest level.

On top of all that, he's a very humble nice guy. Nothing like a typical fake TV personality

But yes. This video is epic, haha. CroCop is hilarious.

Anyone ever see the Croatian TV documentary where they followed him around, CroCop dressed like a mail man and delivered people's mail to them? Including some half naked model looking girl? Hilarious. He also took part in a drunken back yard boxing match between two old ass relatives of his, as the ref. If someone can find that vid, let me know, it's great. I think it's the same one where he pretends to get caught looking at porn in the store, acting like he didn't know the cameras were there haha.

I fucking love CroCop

^ He's still around all the time! I wish the UFC would hire him to do play by play instead of that robot Anik. But, if you watch boxing, GLORY or even sometimes smaller MMA shows, Mauro's voice is there

I love hearing him on the big time boxing fights. Just adds another dimension of enjoyment for me. Brings me back to the PRIDE days and Mauro has a great voice. Really can't wait to hear him call Mayweather/Pacquiao!

Good post OP, classic and obviously relevent considering he's fighting in about 12hours.

Galanis as well as other mma hardcores-

Back when Mauro first started commentating, most mma fans, or at least the ones on message boards, did not take him in well at first. Many people, including myself felt like he was trying too hard and that no one could replace Stephen "The Fight Professor" Quadros who had as much respect commentating Pride as Joe Rogan does now for UFC.

Over time he won fans over. The other Pride guy, I can't remember his name, he also got shit on a lot but he, unlike Renallo, was never accepted by fans.

Goldberg used to universally be shit on as well. In all honesty you could tell early on he didn't know mma as much as the fans watching the fights and listening to his commentary did. I've seen Mike Goldberg's knowledge and talent grow emensly over the years and I think Goldberg is comfortable and not good but great at what he does. Years ago I never thought I would've said that.

Yeah I remember. I always liked him though. He was a little out there during the early Elite XC and SF days. He admitted he has struggled with mental health issues from day 1, and said that during those days (2006-9 or so), his medication was effecting the way his job went.

But I was a huge fan of his commentary in PRIDE. I never disliked him and thought people who hated on him in PRIDE were silly.

The truth is, MMA fans hate most commentators. I even see people shit on Rogan nonstop for being "biased" and whatnot. I think they're all humans and no one is perfect. Rogan may be not at the very top of his game in the last 2 years, but I thnk he's still the best color guy there is because of his knowledge and the excitement be brings to the fights. Stann is a close 2nd.

Bas was always my all time fave guy but even I wll admt his commentary isn't that good nowadays. But he's going through a hell of a lot with his neck, diff meds etc. Plus, Bas is 1 of my heroes. I can see why people don't dig his commentary in 2015, but he was amazing in PRIDE.

I just always liked the PRIDE commentary teams in the beginning. Bravo/Quadros, Quadros/Bas and Bas/Mauro. I hated the guy they brought in to replace Mauro later, and Trigg was ok but was never as god as Bas. That shit was all Jerry Millen's fault. Or as Bas called him on air, "the asshole".

Are you talking about Quadros, D? Quadros has always been kinda weird and a bit of an embellisher when it came to his martial arts skill. I think that's why people didn't like him, plus his attitude of being a know it all sometimes. I dunno though, I always thought he was a good commentator even if he called some moves wrong.. but sometims he'd try to correct Bas and that would get on my nerves. He may have started as a TMA guy but he still made the transition well especially considering the fact he started in the early early 2000s when the sport was still pretty new in terms of evolution.

There was also the claim he put out there that he beat up Joe Rogan in a bathroom, lol. I don't think that ever happened. Remember their back and forth online about it?

Goldberg is still shit on by like 80% of fans. The other 20% have warmed to him. don't hate him, I just tune him out when he's talking during the fights. However, he's very good at his actual job - calling the play by play of the event. All the ads, stats, promos, etc.

A lot of people don't understand that play by play is not calling the moves of the fight move for move. That's a color guys job. People try to say "Joe and Bas would be the best team" or "Joe and Brian", but they don't realize you need a Goldberg, Anik, or Mauro type to lead the broadcast. Joe mentioned once that he had to do Goldie's job n a random UFC show and absolutely hated it.

Goldy is really good at his job, which is very hard - keeping a broadcast going for 4-5 hours. I can't stand his constant "teep" etc stuff, but I agree that he has gotten WAY better in the last 5 years than he was before that.

Plus, I like the back and forth banter between he and Joe. When Joe laughs at the goofy shit he says. I love it. Goldie's voice is important because IMO he represents the "casual" fan and Joe can often correct him on assumptions that "casuL' fans might have too.. Getting into detail about technique, why something s happening, etc

Remember when Mauro got in trouble for his "10 centimeter pole" comment on Elite XC about Gina? Lol

It was during that era he always made those silly sayings and comparisons.

"MAMA MIA HE IS GETTING MORE GRAVY THAN A SWEDISH MEATBALL!"

I can see why people didn't like him, lol, but in PRIDE he was more subdued. And now, on Showtime's boxing fights, he has really come into his own, and sounds PERFECT. Love that guy.

It'd be awesome to get him to a Q&A on here. He's always answering peopleon Twitter. I bet he'd do it.

No, Quadros was the best commentator in the game before Rogan took that spot after Pride. Quadros always had the respect.

The guy I'm talking about that no one liked or ever warmed up to, I just spent 15 minutes trying to find online and I couldn't lol. I guess he's that irrelevent. He had a cheesy voice and cheesy smile. Definitely had a feel of trying way too hard. I can't remember his name for the life of me but if i saw a pic I would know.

I know who you're talking about. Was it the guy who occasionally did early fights? Or the guy who came after Mauro and was teamed with Trigg?

Can't think of either names lol. But, the early guy I remember called called the CroCop vs Igor fght. He was the one yelling "DOWN GOES IGOR". So either him or the guy later I assume. But I have a feeling you mean the first guy (Down Goes Igor guy). He sucked. In fact he sucked so bad he is not worthy of a Google search lol

It's funny going back and watching early PRIDE and KOTC shows that Eddie Bravo did. He looked like Eddie Munster lol. At the time I don't think anyone would've guessed he'd go on to be one of the most well known grapplers out there.

While I was trying to find that Pride commentator, I did discover an interesting correction to what I had thought happened.

Royce Gracie vs Sakuraba. This fight was to take place in the open tournament format, and of all the fighters, only Royce had it in the contract for no time limits.

It's because of that, I always thought that Sakuraba wore a diaper to a press conference to mock Royce and the Gracies for being "babies" with their stipulations....

However a recent article I read, a reporter asked the significance of the diaper, and Sakuraba's response was, "this is a no time limit fight, I'm training in case I need to go to the bathroom". What a fucking jokester that Sakuraba!!!!

The "DOWN GOES IGOR"! always reeked of trying too hard- since he was just lifting the famous "DOWN GOES FRAZIER" line from Cossell. Fuck it, I'm gonna google him.

HAHAHA. WTF! I never heard that either. That's hilarious. I also thought he wore the diaper to mock the Gracie rule set to say they're always crying

Maybe he really was.. But being as classy (and witty) as he is, that was his answer to the media?

Either way, fucking love Sakuraba. Damn.

D - have you ever had the chance to read his autobiography that was translated by a guy on the UG? It's really great. I have that and PRIDE - Secret Files (which s just awesome as well) on my PC if you need them.

The only thing with me though, is I HATE reading books on the PC. I like to hold a book in my hand and be able to move around etc. Staring at the screen for hours on end at plain text doesn't sit well with me. Anyway, I bring this up because if you are interested I can send you both, and what I plan on doing is getting both printed out at the Staples here. It's fairly cheap to print just text, and I'm gonna see how much it would cost to print em all and put them in a standard binder.

Might be crude, but hey.. it's better than reading it on the PC. I figure the expensive part would be having them put it n a binder. I fit's too expensive, I wouldn't mind just punching all the holes in the paper myself and putting it in the cheapest binder available. It's been about 5 years since I read Secret Files and even then I wasn't able to fully enjoy it because it was on the PC. So I'd love to read both that and Saku's book on actual paper.

I agree they should have a 3rd guy in there. No celebs though. Fighters to give that insight that only they can provide.
Fuck that I want the rock to talk us through a submission and tell gold to know his role and shut his mouth.

On a realistic note I agree. Dominic Cruz would be great, as would the count

Awesome dude, I will upload t right now and PM you a link. if anyone is interested, let me know. It's really cool to read Sakuraba talk about his career and how he sees things. He's a funny guy.

The translator also provides a lot of footnotes on diff Japanese expressions and explains what Sakuraba meant in a way that one word in English wouldn't quite makes sense. Great shit.

He dd 2 bios, I had both, but unfortunately lost all ym data last year. Since then I haven't been able to get my hands on the there bio. One is more about his early lfe and pro wrestling, and one is abut his MMA career. The on have that I'm gonna send your way is the MMA era one.

Cruz really has become a great analyst for the studio. I'm a big fan of Stann as well.

And even though EVERYONE hates on him.. I really don't like Anik. Can't stand his voice, he always sounds unexcited and says ridiculous shit

I cringe when he says "this crowd is goin sick" which is constant. Who the fuck says "goin sick" in a regular conversation?

I won't fault him for all the annoying lingo like "stanza", "draws the assignment" and whatever other dumb shit he says. But goin sick?

He ruined the Wand/Stann fight when you watch it back. Zero excitement. Robot. When the fight finshed with thknockout (one of the most excitng wins in one of the most excitng fights ever).. Anik just quietly says "ooo". The littlest amount of emotion I've ever heard at a dramatic knockout in an all time classic.

During that same fight, he pulled the ol' "goin sick" and of course, the classic "nice leg kick from B-Stann" lines out of his ass. Seriously, I just can't stand hearing people talk in a way they'd never talk in real lie. Like a newscaster. Just a total robot who is trying way too hard to act like some hardcore MMA bro. How can you fuck up talking over THAT fight?

"Goin sick." "B-Stann"

WHY WOULD ANYONE EVER SAY THOSE THINGS?

Rant over. Just can't stand him and I fear he well eventually take Goldberg's job and we will have to suffer through him on every show. Plus Anik's constant gambling talk.

Just go away Anik

I'd rather hear Mauro's contrived goofy analogies all day over Anik's robotic, bizarre vocabulary

Mauro has passion and really loves watching fights. I think it's important for the commentators to showcase a level of excitement when the moment calls for it. They don't have to be Rogan, going crazy, but Anik just seems like he's doing his job.

Like I said, the Wand vs Stann fight is the perfect example. His commentary throughout is so bad, not just cringe-worthy, but awful. Then during the finish, he is an emotionless robot. Amazing that out of everyone they'd choose to get the product over to the audience (that is their job), he is the guy who is now heard on more UFC shows than anybody yearly.

Goldie might be a goof but you can tell he loves what he's seeing and gets just as pumped as most do during big moments. Even the moron PRIDE commentator mentioned above was freaking out during CroCop vs Igor.

If Anik called CroCop vs Igor he'd just say something like this during the moment of the knockout - with no emotion

"well there we have it, the underdog perils under the weight of the attack by the betting favorite Mirko CroCop. We'll be back with post fight analysis from the studio"

He sounds like a baseball radio announcer who is about to fall asleep during the 7th inning stretch
