Have you ever been close (within 10 miles) of a disaster that shook the World and received National attention?

If so, what are your thoughts on the event, what went through your mind as the events happened...

I'll get this started off:

Very odd Public Announcement on A.M radio stations across the United States that says: "Trump April 26th" -- this announcement was made prior to the November 8th 2016 Elections where Trump was elected.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is going on April 26th 2017?

Operation Gotham Shield:
http://nnss.gov/docs/docs_FRMAC/FRMAC-STATE Webinar_Gotham Shield Northern Lights brief_JAN 2017.pdf

"On April 18th thru May 5th, 2017, state, local, and federal organizations alike are planning for Operation Gotham Shield 2017 — a major nuclear detonation drill in the New York-New Jersey area, along with the U.S.-Canadian border. During this exercise, 4 nuclear devices, 2 of which are rendered “safe” during the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) Vital Archer Exercise, and one successful 10kt detonation in the NYC/NJ area, along with one smaller detonation on the U.S./Canadian border are to take place."

Among the organizations involved are:

– U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)

– U.S. Department of Defense (DOD)

– U.S. Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO)

– U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)

– U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)

– U.S. Northern Command (NORTHCOM)

– State of New Jersey Office of Emergency Management

– State of New York Office of Emergency Management

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

REMEMBER!

These same types of Drills and Simulations just happened to be scheduled on 9/11/2001:

USATODAY.com - NORAD had drills of jets as weapons

Hope nothing goes down .....god bless you all and stay safe.

i was in down town oakland during the 89 quake.. several brick made buildings collapsed.. i was on my way to my work place at the time to watch the world series .. shit was crazy. basically people in the bay area had no communications with the outside world.. reports that at least 50,000 or more people died.. earthquakes that size are no jokes

Katrina.

I live in South Texas and I remember most roads being flooded like a river for more than a week. And living in a small town were most resources come from the town over it was a terrible situation. I was young but understood how ferocious the world can be.

I was in Brooklyn on 9/11. Ash was raining down on everything.

Also Sandy. Not as big a disaster as some others in world, but huge impact on us. We got my mom and sister out just in time. My mom's house was wrecked. We are STILL dealing with her house. I knew a couple of people who died. In the suburbs we had no heat or electricity for several days, and it was pretty cold. Also there wasn't enough gasoline for several days, and people waited on line for hours for it.

Irene flooded her house, but it wasn't as high or dangerous. She was able to get it fixed up fairly quickly. Needed new flooring and appliances.

Not a world event by any stretch of the imagination, but I drove over the Brent Spence Bridge (I-71, I-75) when Obama gave his speech about fixing it back in 2011. It's a functionally obsolete bridge that needs to be replaced. I'm on it twice a day, and I'm certain that one of these days it will crash into the Ohio River.

But back in 2011, I was driving on the bridge at the same time I was listening on the radio to Obama tell us how he was going to fix it, and I could see him down in the rock quarry where he was giving the speech from. It was actually pretty cool.

And no - they didn't fix shit. Another broken political promise.

Hurricane Andrew - Wikipedia

At its time the most destructive hurricane in history, now ranks as 4th-most destructive. Fortunately for me its most powerful winds hit about an hour south of where I'm at, so we only lost power for a day.

Hurricane Wilma - Wikipedia

By far the worst hurricane I have ever experienced. Meteorologists told us that it would only pass over as a category 1, but when it hit, it was a category 3. Ranks as the 5th-most destructive hurricane ever.

No power for 2-3 weeks, no street lights, no gas for your cars (the county has since passed a law requiring 30% of gas stations to be on generator power).

If you're in a safe structure that is well-protected, there is little to no worry during the actual hurricane. But it's the after-effects that are fucking terrible. I remember waiting in line for an hour to get a bag of ice from the National Guard.

Nothing really weather related.

But Virginia Tech shooting - Wikipedia

This happened while I lived there. As it turned out, Cho bought a lot of his ammo from my store and the (fishing) vest that he wore during the shootings. I tracked down the video of the transactions and receipts to give to the investigators. A girl that I knew in passing was shot and wounded.

Definitely turned that small town on it's head for a while.

Ice Storm 98:

Shit could snap trees and power lines like it was nothing. We were without power for about a week.

I was also effected by the 03 Blackout:

I felt this up in BC. I was in 1st year electrical Al apprenticeship asleep with my chair back against the wall. I woke up as I though somebody was shaking me a bit for lunch or something but found out it was this thing.

2001 Nisqually earthquake - Wikipedia

I was a first year as well.
I'd got hammered the night before, and was pouring cream and sugar in my coffee, and noticed too much cream flowing as I was on tilt.
I thought it was the hangover until my chick said, "Is that an earthquake?".
Then all hell broke loose.

Few hurricanes.

The biggest was the VA Tech shooting. That one was wild. Because of where i was working at the time I had to deal with investigators after the fact. Crazy shit.
