There is no union or association among UFC fighters, though three groups have formed over the last several years attempting to do so.

Smith, who has fought for the UFC since 2014, had no idea how Bryant, the retired Los Angeles Lakers legend, would answer the question. Bryant was one of many speakers at the retreat, which was designed to introduce the fighters to the newly opened UFC Performance Institute as well as introduce them to the new owners, WME/IMG.

Smith told Bryant that UFC fighters were trying to form a union, and she asked him how important the NBA Players Association was for him in terms of his own contract negotiations.

When she asked the question, there was a small applause from other fighters in the room.

“It was only a smattering of applause, but it was a pretty big deal, if you ask me,” Smith said. “We were brought there by WME/IMG. It was being filmed. It was paid for by [UFC CEO] Ari [Emanuel] and the other owners. Kobe was brought there by them to speak to us. And retribution in the UFC is very real. So while it wasn’t this huge ovation, the fact that as many fighters applauded as they did is very significant to me.”

But any significance would ultimately rest on how Bryant answered the question. If he gave a pro-management answer, no one would have been emboldened, and the struggling effort by the fighters to organize and improve their situations might have completely fizzled.

Bryant, though, did not do that.

“Even us as players, we have our union meetings, and we’re normally at each other’s throats competing against each other,” Bryant said. “But we understand completely that a rising tide raises all boats. So when you guys have this union and you operate on the same page together, it will 100 percent fortify the sport and make the sport better, not just for the present but for future generations coming. It’s extremely important.”

Buuuuuuuut... but why are they listening to someone the ownership paid to talk to them? Is he an owner? I feel his purpose there isn't for the benefit of the fighters? Am I misunderstanding the situation? They have to know he's not being trotted out as an example of how rich they can be if they tow the company line?

Kobe clearly gives no fucks as he just encouraged them to see the union through as it's to their benefit. Seeing as the ownership group that we know of is largely people who are rich on account of unions maybe they don't want the fighters to continue being the bottom of the athletic barrel.

You're definitely misunderstanding it.

Hm, interesting, interesting. I will contemplate this... on the tree of woe.

In all seriousness it's possible that the new ownership group realizes there's more money to be made with the UFC if they're actual full time professional athletes rather than the part timers they are now. If that's the case everyone wins.

It just doesn't seem like a union benefits the ownership, so it struck me as weird that they'd pay Kobe to talk to them, knowing it would likely come up. And then it did and he encouraged it.

How does it not benefit ownership? As it stands right now, the UFC is full of lower rate, part time athletes. The only way to change that is to make the sport as appealing as the big 4 (5) are.

...huh? Part-time? Now you definitely lost me.
A lot of the UFC roster are part time fighters that have other jobs to be able to make a living. 12k/fight x 3 fights a year doesn't go very far after taxes and training camps are paid for.

Who is Kobe Bryant and why is he important to fighters, unions or the UFC?
1. One of the greatest basketball players of all time.

2. He has been very successful in how he manages his money, and he was invited there to speak in order to give fighters advice on how to manage their money (I presume).

3. He played in the NBA, which has a players union, like all major team sports in the US.

He didn't broach the topic of unions, he was asked a question about unions and he answered it honestly. Whether or not WME-IMG knew that he would be asked a question about unions by one of the fighters, I have no idea. But it wasn't in his speech/presentation to fighters.

Thanks. That clears it up.

None of which explains the title of that article, however.

If the UFC fighters ever organize, it won't have anything at all to do with the fact Kobe fucking Bryant answered a question about unions.
