Lee seems like a cocky tool to me. Guess I can't be mad tho, I might be too if I was a 24 year old bad ass.

I agree but I'm willing to admit it could be I'm getting old and just don't understand the kids and their attitudes these days. I know if my boy blamed his problems on his race and said shit about others parents I'd be disappointed witb his actions.

But I guess acting like an jackass and running your mouth makes you rich and famous at the present so what the fuck do I know.

Speculation, but we'll never know
True, but Chiesa also probably doesn't know. Usually when guys wake up, the only way they really know they were asleep is that the circumstances have changed (e.g. opponent isn't where they think the opponent is, and they wake up wrestling the ref). Fully believing you weren't sleeping doesn't mean you weren't.

The hand waving moment was one of those situations where nobody knows for sure if he's asleep or not.

If you polled the best refs, they would probably all side with Yamasaki as far as erring on the side of "protect the fighter from himself" as opposed to "do what a fighter would want you to do" in reviewing it. Plus, he's in a situation where time's expanded and he's seeing in greater detail, right inside the action, than a TV viewer. And he's a blackbelt & long time instructor whose read is informed by that.

He knows the technique & it was locked -- once the locking forearm goes behind the back, locked downward, with the control of the hips solid & the choke in that deep, with a guy as strong as Lee and a choke-ee like Chiesa who's not going to tap, but who has stopped fighting the choke itself, his job is pretty much reduced to that question of when to stop it (safe to say Yamasaki knew he was in a situation where the choked fighter was one who likely would go out rather than tap, and it crossed his mind).

I looked at the other site & the objections there are just stupid/ignorant, as usual.

It's a borderline call, but if you (generalized "you," not you RH) were a ref the prejudices would be different. What we want, or what the fighter wants is kind of irrelevant to the Ref's job -- his job's in part to protect the fighter from what the fighter wants and it is certainly not to give a shit about anything the crowd or stupid fans want.

Has Lee made comments about his social construct holding him back?

Nope. He totally owns it and talks openly about his brother being in prison, etc.
Ya I haven't heard anything Tyron-esque at all.

Lee earned big points with me making fun of people wearing sunglasses indoors. Seems like a good guy imo.

A while back he was making a bunch of comments about the only reason people liked Sage and Paige and that the UFC pushed them was because they're privileged white kids. He also made comments about how the UFC doesn't know how to promote black champions (Anderson, Jon jones, Daniel Cormier don't count apparently) and that they put their money behind white guys. He also talked about how all Irish people are inbred with bad genetics in a interview.

While there may be some truth to both those statements if a white guy started shitting on new black fighters, champions or said a black race was inbred and genetically weak he would be labeled a Nazi. I think the standard should go both ways.

Agree the reaction would be different but you're right with regards to him having a point. I definitely think there's some truth to his comments.

There's definitely truth in his statements, I know I've always thought the Irish are inbred and genetically inferior.

Honestly I didn't know that was legal, incredibly creative move to keep the pressure on.
Iirc the rule is you can grab your own equipment but not the opponents. We see lots of guys grab their own shorts to stop kimura attempts or whatever but you obviously can't grab theirs. First time I've seen the glove bite outside the bedroom.

I thought the no biting rule would include yourself and equipment but I guess not.

That video also shows just how tight that choke was. Chiesa was going to sleep no mater what (right or wrong) Yamasaki did.
