The Association of Boxing Commissions today voted unanimously to add four new weight classes to the unified rules of MMA, increasing to 13 the number of recognized divisions in the sport.

The new weight classes include:

  • 165 pounds (super lightweight)
  • 175 pounds (super welterweight)
  • 195 pounds (super middleweight)
  • 225 pounds (cruiserweight)
The process wasn’t completely smooth sailing. A rep from the New York State Athletic Commission initially expressed reservations about the additions, saying they needed more time to be vetted. ABC Chairman Mike Mazzulli presented a motion to strike the cruiserweight class from the list. Commissioners also expressed concern about large discrepancies – or the “spread” – within the weight classes. In turn, the ABC rules committee agreed to examine the issue for next year’s meeting.

The authors of the rule change stressed that promoters are not required to use the weight divisions – and may never. ABC rules and regulations committee chairperson Sean Wheelock today told MMAjunkie the new divisions are “absolutely not” meant to dilute the talent pool and remake MMA into something more resembling boxing.

But the hope, according to ABC’s medical chair Andy Foster, is that more divisions will keep fighters from cutting extreme amounts of weight to fit into the divisions currently popular in the sport.

Is CSAC's plan for curtailing MMA's extreme weight-cutting problem going far enough?

Foster, the California State Athletic Commission’s executive director and a leader in weight-cutting reform, pressed members that the dehydration of MMA fighters is the sport’s biggest issue. He said that while the CSAC could on its own implement a 10-point plan to curb excessive weight loss, the new divisions are critical to the sport’s regulation among ABC member commissions.

Foster said the new divisions might not make a huge impact initially. He admitted UFC reps already have expressed concern at the elimination of the welterweight class. But he said as fighters migrate to the new divisions or begin their careers there, promoters could shift to accommodate the demand.

“If you’ve got a bunch of fighters at 170 and this body eliminates (the welterweight class), that’s a terrible business idea,” he said. “But they understand the problem with dehydration. I know the UFC is not going to open 175 this afternoon. But it sets it up for the future.”

I'm fine with this as long as they keep 185 and 205

Should be 10lbs separation for weight classes up to 205 and then jump to anywhere from 220-230 and then jump up to 265

I like everything on that list. There aren't any heavyweights that are less that 225 but maybe some would cutdown. If they did this and took away the upper limit on heavyweight it would be great.

Huge huge fan of this. That middleweight chasm area has always been an issue.

The UFC will fuck it up though.

Every other mma promotion should embrace this wth open arms

So, I imagine 170 is going away?
Completely retarded to have 3 weight classes in 10#.
165, 170, 175...

170's the only oddball left.

I'm fine with all of that except for 225(assuming they get rid of 170). 225 is stupid as hell. They should just make LHW 205-225 then HW 225-265. Not like any HWs are that light anyways.

I don't like this. Too many weight classes just muddies up the divisions more. Fighters will be changing divisions all the time.

It will just be too many divisions, all with revolving fighters, to keep track of. The ufc will turn into a school of fish making it even harder for a fighter to stand out individually.

Agreed. Ridiculous that we force even some fucking HWs to dangerously cut weight to fight. I think the existence of such a phenomenon is close to the pinnacle of collective human stupidity.

how come they don't have a MMA commission? That should be the new challenge for any MMA pioneer should be working on. MMA ppl sing about Boxing is dying yet they use Boxing commission to make up the rules? still got long ways to go MMA.

Yeah not a fan of this either. Most divisions in the UFC are already thin.

I like this they should really just do every 10 pounds from 125 to 205 the 205 to 225 and 225 to 265.

This is actually great news, but only if promotions start giving fights at the new weights. Clearing this regulatory hurdle is a good step to prevent some of the dehydration issues we've seen.

What I'd like to see is a smaller promotion step in and try to work on developing the best fighters for 165-175 and just focus on that niche, kind of like WEC did with the lighter weights, or Shooto before them. Also I'd like to see the bigger promotions use these classes to deliver fights that would be more entertaining sans the draining cut or anyone getting too bulky. Cerrone and other tweeners could get some fun fights at 165. A 195 lb division could get us a nice fight between Rockhold and Gustaffson, which I'd love to see for some reason.

That's what I thought was happening. 205-225 just means 205 guys won't have to cut weight which should make for less gassing. If 225 is its own weight class fuck that.

Yes, we need more shallow divisions, more belts, so we can have more interim belts. I can understand adding one to fill in the 185/205 gap, but this is going overboard. Oh imagine all the "super fights" we're going to get! Catch weight will have little meaning, that is for sure.

I mean, the amount of weight classes isn't exactly the issue. These are decently spaced out, just there is going to be a 170'er who is going to want to take advantage of a 165lb division.

The mindset is the advantage for most, like AJ using to cut 60+lbs to make 170. That was not longer a discipline/fighting shape influenced cut, it was for the advantage. And can almost guarantee you he would have considered cutting an extra 5 if he thought he could do it way back. Same with Hendricks

Yup. 225 would also further decimate the already worst division in the UFC in LHW.

Not a fan of all the additions. These are the weight classes the way I think they should be:

HEAVYWEIGHT = Over 225lbs. with no limit
LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT = 225lbs.
CRUISERWEIGHT = 210lbs.
MIDDLEWEIGHT = 195lbs.
WELTERWEIGHT = 180lbs.
LIGHTWEIGHT = 165lbs.
FEATHERWEIGHT = 155lbs.
BANTAMWEIGHT = 145lbs.
Flyweight = 135lbs.
Jr. Flyweight = 127lbs.
Strawweight = 120lbs.
Jr. Strawweight = 113lbs.
Minimumweight = 108lbs.

There should also be no cutting allowed. Here are some explanations of my weight classes. And amazingly enough I created these weight classes based on SCIENCE and not some rando idea I had. They take into account the weight distribution of males from the main countries that have a big MMA presence.

HEAVYWEIGHT = Over 225lbs. with no limit
This covers guys from Cain to Brock. As usual, being a HW for most world class HWs is a choice. They simply do not cut any weight and work to bulk themselves up as much as they can without losing speed and endurance.

LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT = Over 210lbs to 225lbs.
This covers all the current LWHs even Jones, Cormier and Tito. All they'd have to do is not bulk up too much. Tito was at 219lbs. right before his weight cut for the Schlemenko fight.

CRUISERWEIGHT = Over 195 to 210lbs.
This would cover all the middle weights like Anderson, Jacare, Bisping and Hendo. Even guys like Vitor and Chael who have often fought at LHW. They would just have to stay away from bulking up like they do when fighting at 205. Johny Hendrix would fit in her perfectly unless he really got himself super fat and couldn't get below 210lbs.

MIDDLEWEIGHT = Over 180 to 195lbs.
This should cover all the modern WWs like GSP, Condit, Lombard & Lawler. Also, a small current MW fighter like Schlemenko would fight here against guys his size (without having to cut).

WELTERWEIGHT = Over 165 to 180lbs.
This is where a fighter like Nick Diaz could end up fighting without bulking up a bit like he did for the Anderson fight (I believe Nick walks around at 178) along with all the modern LW guys like Maynard, Pettis (walks at 180lbs?), Bendo, Alvarez, Chandler, Diego, Gilbert Melendez, etc. Nick could even just bulk up and stay fighting the guys who would end up at 180-195 since size doesn't mean too much to him.

LIGHTWEIGHT = Over 155 to 165lbs.
Here is where fighters like Conor, Aldo, Pat Curran, Pitbull Freire, Koch, Frankie Edgar, TKZ, Lamas and Chad Mendes would fight.

FEATHERWEIGHT = Over 145 to 155lbs.
This would be the weightclass for Barao, TJ, Faber, Cruz, Soto, R. Assuncao, Macdonald, Warren, Dantas et al

BANTAMWEIGHT = Over 135 to 145lbs.
And here is Might Mouse's class with Benevidez, Uncle Creepy and all the other current 125lbs fighters.

These weights are just for reference

Flyweight = Over 127 to 135lbs.
Jr. Flyweight = Over 120 to 127lbs.
Strawweight = Over 113 to 120lbs.
Jr. Strawweight = Over 108 to 113lbs.
Minimumweight = Over 103 to 108lbs.
