my mom needs to replace her old a/c unit. The company quoted her $6700 to replace the a/c condenser and coil. I think it's a two ton system. the brand is American standard.

They also offered to replace the a/c unit and furnace at the same time for $8800. Her unit is 22 years old or so. Would that be wise? Her furnace has no issues at the moment.

They said it has a 5 year labor and 10 year parts warranty.

Is this a fair price? She trusts them to do a good job but I want to make sure she's not getting screwed. I know next to nothing about home repairs and am hoping some of you fine folk are knowledgeable.

She is in california, too, so I imagine the prices are higher there.

In NC, that's about twice the going rate for replacement here.

Maybe get a couple additional quotes to compare would be my advice.

Thanks a bunch for that link, it helps a ton to educate me on the subject.

I think it's best to wait and make my mom get at least one more quote. The main issue is that I need it to be a reputable company as it seems proper installation is more important than a reputable brand regarding future issues. Cheaper is not always better so they say.

I expect higher prices in cali but double over NC seems a bit much. I really need more info regarding which unit this guy will be installing.

Thanks again for your input, it helps quite a bit.

With AC, everything this about quality and tonnage, so prices will fluctuate quite a bit. Best thing to do for price is replace furnace in summer and AC in winter. Unfortunately, that isn't always feasible.
