I don't think Vaseline should be allowed.

People cried their pathetic faces off over GSP and 'greasegate' years ago. So why is Vaseline allowed on their face?

Rhetorical: I know it's to reduce being cut.

Here is my problem, which is layered. If you don't want to get cut, try not getting elbowed in the face. If a silly little cut can stop a fight, hit your opponent before they hit you. Fights should never be stopped due to a cut. A fighter can stop the fight on their own if they choose to. If they want to continue to fight (for you youngins, that's how the "sport" started was actual fighting and not playing for silly points in weight classes and time limits) you let him fight. (See Neer v. Guilliard)

Vaseline is like making your kid wear a helmet while biking around the block. It's fucking stupid. Let them bang. Let them bleed.

Incidently the GSP/phil nurse thing is why in Bellator and the UFC, only the cutmen are allowed to bring grease cageside. So that a neutral party is in control of it and its placement.

I think it's common to overgrease when you have the chance. Ref's job to enforce rules, not the corner. Phil did his job.

But small cuts that turn into gushers ruin cards.

I don't think Vaseline should go away. Fighters needs a little bit of something to help protect themselves from being cut so easily.

Like not getting punched in the face? By that logic they should be bathed in baby oil so no one can secure a dangerous joint lock.

Serious question, that I honestly don't know the answer to: Where in the unified ruled is it eloquated about what parts of your body you can grease and where you can't?

In the rules meeting section it says:

"Use of Vaseline and other similar substances

Absolutely "no" body grease, gels, balms, lotions oils, or other substances may be applied to the hair, face or body. This includes the use of excessive amounts of water "dumped" on a contestant to make him/her slippery. However, Vaseline may be applied solely to the facial area at cage side or ringside in the presence of an inspector, referee, or a person designated by the commission. Any contestant applying anything other than Vaseline in an approved fashion at the appropriate time could be penalized a point or subject to loss by disqualification."

I still disagree.

If there was no Vaseline allowed, we would see WAY more fights end early from cuts. Leather from the gloves grips the skin surprisingly well and makes it really easy to get cut from punches, and even easier to have small cuts get extended. Cuts bleeding into the eyes are a big deal, as are some cuts near the facial nerves.

While the unified rule was correctly stated above, I still run into different interpretations from state to state. In GENERAL it is accepted that grease is applied to what we call the "mask of the face" which I have literally heard identified as "You know, like a fuckin' raccoon", in some states *Cough NEW JERSEY Cough* they get picky and you can do the brows, and you can do the bridge of the nose and under the eyes, but if you do the area to the sides of the eyes, god help you and your immortal soul for this violation of the trust of the sanctity of the holy relation between Vaseline and fighter.

In my general opinion though the NJAC will find fault with anything done by someone other than them in order to facilitate maximum camera time with the correction of said horrendous deed that they deem horrendous.

Im not bitter at their incompetence though.

But nothing prevents the fighter from touching their face and then their neck...or shoulders...or ankle.

Thats why I put a thin sheen on and not a gob like your coach would. Its not enough to be an advantage for much more than helping to prevent cuts and abrasions from the dry leather on the skin.

Even if it was some crazy advantage, both fighters have it in the same amount thanks to a 3rd party application.

I will say, in Boxing you can go nuts with grease and lotion. I think it should be regulated more closely there.

it's because the covering of the gloves can abrade skin and cause a cut inconsistent with the quality of the strike, especially an accumulation of strikes. It's an attempt to mitigate the consequences of covering the fist with something other than living human flesh.

Now that you said that I'm thinking of all the times fighters start rounds by wiping their face and then their arms, chest and shorts.
