According to former boxing champ Paulie Malignaggi, discussions are underway for a potential fight with sparring partner-turned bitter rival Conor McGregor.

“I know Al Haymon’s talking with Dana White,” Malignaggi told Fight Hype. “I know they’re speaking, so if they want the fight they’ll make it.”

Dear god, let us hope they do not want the fight. Let us do more than hope. Let us offer up blood sacrifices to avoid this fate. Let us throw a virgin into a volcano and slaughter a goat on the first fine market day. Let us seize the property of those who would advocate for such a fight, then gather their belongings in the town square and set them ablaze. Let us never relent.

On some level, sure, I get it. Malignaggi sniffs a payday. He has an image to maintain. He has a very personal grudge against McGregor that has at times drifted into restraining order territory. He has a very distinct way of pronouncing the word “balls,” (boo-awls) and a corresponding love of saying it over and over again.

It’s not surprising that he wants this fight, but the powers that be must not let him have it. The reason is very simple: While a little bit of ridiculousness can be fun, too much is just plain stupid.

McGregor’s boxing match with Floyd Mayweather, for instance? Just absurd enough to be a good time, though even then we had to exercise extreme patience and suspend more than a little disbelief in order to enjoy it.

But another boxing match, especially against Malignaggi, all while his UFC lightweight title goes undefended? That’s the point where McGregor would drift hopelessly into self-parody.

And for what? I mean, money, sure. But there’s plenty of that to be found elsewhere. The UFC is desperate for McGregor’s return. MMA fans are, too. A better-than-expected performance against Mayweather likely only increased his star power, which means he could defend his UFC title against a coat rack right now and still break MMA pay-per-view records.

A boxing match with Malignaggi, on the other hand, would be a step backwards in every meaningful sense. It would be the lazy sequel to the breakout hit, the “Speed 2: Cruise Control” of combat sports matchups. And you know something? There’s a good reason Keanu Reeves turned that sequel down, and it’s because he has some sense.

At this point, this fight 100% makes the most sense for Conor. Whoever wrote that article is completely delusional about what took place in August.

I look at it this way. Nate is the lone "money fight" in the UFC. Paulie will be a substantially bigger payday. If he beats Paulie, it opens the door for May/Mac 2. and the Nate "the People's Champ" Diaz will still be around for that fight against Conor. I know that none of that is what MMA fans want to hear but it's the God's honest truth.

Delusional? Which part?
Specifically this:

Apparently he doesn't realize that in a "Speed" analogy Floyd is Keanu, and Conor is Sandra Bullock.

100% agree. I think it's folly to expect conor vs Ferguson or khabib. Terrible cost/benefit ratio

And tbh, conor has built himself into a spectacle, but in a good way. As long as theres a story, im in. And I like it

I don't know why people get so mad at him for being such an anomoly. His events are always tons of fun

He will probably figure a way to make other shit I've never cared for interesting down the line

He did make an analogy based on a film released 23 years ago and its sequel, which tells us a lot about the guy. You're right however, Floyd is Keanu, but I would say that (maybe) Conor is Dennis Hopper and Dana is Sandra Bullock.

It is the truth, money wise, paulie is the fight
I personally don't want it all but that's more because I'm a huge Diaz and Ferguson fan and would like Espcially ferg to get his shot
If conor gives up the belt to go back to boxing and Tony is the only lw champ, id be ok with it but I doubt that happens

It makes sense for Conor to vacate and fight Paulie.
Whenever he does come back he gets an instant title shot, just like Ronda, Jones, or Conor @ LW.
Tony is crowned, defends against Khabib maybe(finally), Nate then gets screwed for Conor III but he'll still get a decent payday with someone.
Whatever, I don't really give a shit anymore.
El Cucuy has been champ in my eyes since that insane Barboza fight, and solidified it with RDA.

Barboza just signed to fight khabib, waiting on khabib to sign
I wouldn't be surprised at Tony/Nate for the title and conor fights winner on return
And I agree completely about ferg being the real lw champ

Didn't Jeff Horn just say that he's signed a two fight deal, with the second one being McGregor?

There won't be another may Mac fight. The skill level is just too big in favor of Mayweather. People don't want to see mcgregor carried another 10 rounds. However the Paulie fight may happen because there is a legit beef. And Paulie is a shell of his former self and nowhere near the caliber of mcgregor.

If Conor holds a win over a former world champion in his second pro fight it definitely gives validity to a second Mayweather fight.

That former champion is built like mashed potatoes and hasn't fought in forever. Wolf tickets.
You know what else is wolf tickets? A guy who's never had a boxing match fighting one of the best boxers to ever live. People still bought the fuck out of it though.
