in my estimation, if you count swing dance and other popular dances, I'm going with ~ 20% have some form of formal dance training. Not like "took a couple classes" but "trained at a dance studio doing fun dances for a couple months".

I'm sure people who try to become professional dancers do fall back into stripping just like failed actors fall into porn. I would only put percent at 10 because dance lessons are expensive so not a whole lot of professional dancers compared to the amount of people who try to take up acting and fail.

Most strippers I've met are working their way through university (they've told me as much and I've no reason to doubt them), so I'd say not many have formal training in the art of dance.
So there's a strip club right across the VA/WVA border that has a regular amateur night. It just so happens that it's about 30 minutes away from Virginia Tech and Radford.
Needless to say it's loaded with students that don't want to work a real job but need beer money.
It's also loaded with former students that either dropped out or got addicted to the money they were making stripping and stuck with it when their art history degrees didn't land them six figure salaries right after graduation.
