Darren Till caused an MCL tear to Stephen Thompson’s left knee after repeatedly landing a side kick in the opening round, and ‘Wonderboy’ believes Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) should look to prohibit that technique from being used in the Octagon.

Thompson, who dropped a unanimous decision to Till in ‘The Gorilla’s’ hometown of Liverpool, England, is forced to sit on the sidelines for at least eight weeks and feels the Liverpudlian was intentionally trying to cause injury at UFC Fight Night 130.

“You know I tore my MCL in the fight with Till,” Thompson told BJ Penn.com’s Chris Taylor in a recent interview. “We did an MRI and thankfully nothing else was damaged. No surgery is required for this…

I'd like to see them banned too. It's a dirty tactic that seemed to start at Jackson's.

How is it different than trying to take someone's nose out...or the same as trying to take someone's eye out?

We should ban armbars too .... for trying to take out someone's elbow.
    And kneebars... and keylocks.

Or Wonderboy should suck it up and learn to defend them like Whittaker did...

lol Alistair Overeem and Mcgregor want takedowns to be prohibited, Jacare and Maia want to prohibit stand up punches,
Francis Ngannou and Derrick Lewis want to prohibit 5 minute rounds and change it to 1 minute rounds.

You're in a fight unless he kicks you in the balls, you need to find a way to block that kick, such is life my friend, you do not get it your way always

I never liked the sidekicks to the knees

because the technique doesn't require too much energy, it could be used in volume, hard to defend, easy to land, and without causing too much damage toward the outcome of the fight, it has big potential for career-ending injuries.

it is different from other common techniques but maybe similar to something like an eye-poke or foot stomps

I think the perception of it being a dirty move is because it was implemented by Jon Jones, who many percieves as a dirty fighter (eye pokes)

How is banning kicks to the balls any different - because it's 'dirty'? Kicking someone in the balls is effective and a legit technique. Why not go back to the Keith Hackney days and make it incumbent on the other guy to defend? All you're doing is admitting even you have an arbitray line of what should be accepted but thinking it's ridiculous other people move the line a little.

I'm generally a fan of less rules (I want knees on the ground, soccer kicks etc.) but even I've come to the opinion they should be banned. Why?

Because, as is exactly the case with Wonderboy, they are likely to cause a serious injury that DOESN'T create a finish in the fight itself, which is the complete inverse of what we want - finishes with fighters being Ok after the fight. And if they do cause a finish it is most likely because they have caused a serious, potentially career-altering injury. This is simply not a dynamic that exists with any other legal technique in the sport.

And unlike some culturally-defined 'dirty' moves like soccer kicks, removing them changes very little from the sport.

They are the rabbit punches of the legs and should be made illegal.

Hadn't seen this post when I typed mine. Generally spot on.

I disagree with the direct causal relationship with Jones though, I think it works both ways. Less people would be against oblique kicks if say Robert Whittaker was the first to popularize them, agreed. But Jon Jones would also be seen as a bit less of a dirty fighter if he didn't use them too.

They just look inherently dirty to a lot of people, as they should, because they are.

What's the diff between trying to take someone's acl out vs trying to concuss someone's brain into a spasm? Under that logic we should ban heel hooks too...

    LOL at "career ending injuries"!!!!!!

What do u think concussions are? U thinknit's worse to get ur knee broken than get ur head bashed in?????

And as far as ball shots go....

They r banned simply because no one wants to watch it. That one time with Hackney was hilarious and then that's it. No one wants to watch the Ultimate Ball Bashing Championship. Same with hair pulling. It just makes a mess out of a fight so people are like, "Nah, just ban it." Those two are banned in the same way laying in ur opponent's guard for 30 mins is banned via stand ups.

You know basically every single dipshit that has the same opinion as you already said the first part, right? And it's almost word for word the same inane generic response that gets trotted out every time this topic comes up.

We've clearly explained our position as to why they are different from normal techniques, that, yes, can cause serious injury but can also finish fights and can do so WITHOUT causing serious injury. That's two key differences and it's why these kicks are similar to rabbit punches.

So now the argument is for you to adequately explain why it's any different to ban groin kicks and rabbit punches. All you've come up with is 'groin kicks aren't a good look'. The same can be said, and often is, of these kicks.

Not sure how I feel about it. Its a legit tactic that would work in a fight
but for sport you can literally end someone's career which aint cool at all

Public perception and getting sanctioned were big parts of implementing some of the rules.
Groin shots had already been regarded as fouls in every other combat sport.

    Groin shots are so cheap
You might as well also allow someone to hide a knife and use it for good measure to gouge someone’s eye out to get an advantage
