My instructor and I have often joked that we need to be more aggressive about recruiting people who look like they should be training BJJ, particularly some of the parents who we see secretly observing BJJ class while their kid is doing their karate class on the other mat.
I went to lift earlier than usual yesterday, and as I was getting my bag out of my truck, a dude about my age pulled into the lot and I noticed a Sambo t-shirt hanging in his back seat.
Our conversation started with “Hey- do you train Sambo?”, and after 30 minutes I learned that his late father was Russian and a Master of Sport. He trained, but stopped when he had to get a shoulder replaced. He missed training, but needed a push to get back in.
He starts Wednesday AM. I can feel my leg locks getting better already.
