Source: Pet kangaroo gets loose and hops around town in IA
NORWALK, IA (KCCI/CNN) - Just after 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, a strange animal was spotted hopping around businesses in this Iowa city.
“I wasn’t sure if it was really a kangaroo or if it was a prank call,” said Greg Bryant of the Norwalk Police. “Yeah, it’s a kangaroo.”
The kangaroo escaped from his home in the city limits, where he was kept as a pet.
It’s legal to have a pet kangaroo, according to Iowa code.
You can’t keep dangerous wild animals as pets - that includes coyotes, lions, pandas, rhinoceros.
But kangaroos - they’re not listed.
“It sounds like the owner had everything in order to have a pet kangaroo,” Bryant said, noting that the animal was the size of a “medium-sized dog, I guess.”
After about 30 minutes, officers finally cornered the kangaroo in an alley and trapped him in a cage they found nearby.
“He ended up jumping at me, and I caught it inside the dog kennel,” Bryant said.
The Department of Natural Resources kept the kangaroo until its owner could be reached.
Even after his adventure with this little guy, Officer Bryant says he’s not ready for life in the outback.
