I have been looking for a bjj school near me(without driving for hours). We adopted our 2 granddaughters and with all the shit that's happened to the family over the years I felt this would be a good place to start.
    So my question is...
    1. How does one determine that its not a Mc Dojo?
    2. Cost, I know it varies but a little steeper then I had thought. Looking like its $220 a month.
    3. They teach more then bjj and I'm fucking confused about who is teaching what to whom.
a black belt is teaching newer kids(mostly white belts) and a purple belts is teaching advanced classes for the adults. Is this the norm?
Would it be appropriate to name the school and instructor here? Looking for more information on obtaining information without looking like a bigger dick then I all ready am.

I don't think there's anything wrong with posting the school and ask if anybody knows about it. We've got a lot of people that teach have some credentials and could tell you.

At 10 years old I probably wouldn't get too concerned about the legitimacy of the school unless you have lots of options in your area and then shop around. Just a physicality and team building and learning to basics is a great start and you can see how the instructors act and who's teaching.

It's also not uncommon for purple belts to get farmed out by the instructors for new number of classes. This includes advanced. There's probably a lot of rotation and some of it comes down to which person is available for that evening class or whatever.

I chose the school for my son because it was a Gracie gym, but what really solidified my decision was the trial day (how he was treated by the adults and kids), and the willingness to work with me on the costs.

My gym is $159USD/mo. He can attend six one-hour classes each week, the Gi was included, and all belts and promotion ceremonies are also included.

The only The my gym has is one striking class a week, taught by the guy that teaches them on no gi days. It works well because they alternate gi and no gi (MWF no, Tues, Thurs, Sat on).

I enjoy how they interact with the kids, remember their names, even if they’ve only been there once before.
Also, talk to other parents and adults that are there. A lot of them have been to a few different gyms in their time. The adults and parents at my place had nothing bad to say, which made me feel at ease.

Jiu Jitsu gyms, like any other business are subjected to public critiques on Yelp and Google..... You can always check the reviews and see what people say about it.

If you are wondering in the success of a school in Jiu Jitsu, check them out on the local competition team, do they go out and compete? Are their students well trained? I for one can never vouch for a gym if they never compete (that's just me).

If you're wondering the validity of an instructor, you can check out their background, look up their lineage, ask them who they received their black belt from..... You can always go on www.ibjjf.com to look up certified black belts (only downside to this, is if your coach hasn't registered the gym or their belts with the IBJJF).

I know many multi martial art training complexes across the US, the good ones are the ones that make sure that they have a true expert in each MA discipline they offer.

Thanks a ton for this information. Starting to feel much better about this.
Yeah, 3 classes a week for a month then 4 a week after that.

I think you should continue to look around because that’s quite expensive.
    You’re in Canada, correct?

Prices vary widely by location. Even $160/mo. would be considered expensive around here. I've paid that much total for 2 kids, 5+ days/week. It's not a quality issue either. These are highly regarded competitors with very nice facilities. Judo and wrestling clubs are even less expensive.

If somebody was asking $220/mo. for one kid, I'd expect an ATT or AOJ level kids program with a bunch of value added. Or maybe I unknowingly got a discount for being such a cool dude.

That's sounds incredibly high. My kids are about $95 a month and can train four times a week. A family pass for myself and two kids is $265CA.

@Dusty Knuckles@Dusty Knuckles good for you for taking them under your wing

Closer to Toronto, the price range is usually about 80-160$ a month. But where you are there is probably not much competition. PM me the gym if you want and I can ask around about their lineage and pedigree.
