The California attorney general says a San Diego man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for operating a "revenge porn" website and charging victims to remove the images.

Attorney General Kamala Harris said Friday that Kevin Bollaert's sentence shows there are severe consequences for exploiting people online.

Bollaert was convicted in February of identity theft and extortion in San Diego Superior Court.

Prosecutors say he ran the website ugotposted.com, where people put nude photos of ex-lovers, who then had to pay Bollaert to take down the images.

Prosecutors say victims included teachers, wives and professionals. The compromising photos cost people jobs, damaged relationships and led to one attempted suicide.

Prosecutors say Bollaert earned about $30,000 from people who paid to remove the images.

If you want to be a douchebag, ruin lives, and profit off it, then I really have no problems with an 18 year sentence.

I don't like this punishment...too severe imo. Firstly, in this day and age you HAVE to be of the mindset that if you allow someone to take nudes(pics or vids) at some point the shit is going to wind up on the internet somehow or someway. So if you got a problem with it going public don't fucking allow it ya dumb fucks!

I'd like to know how many of these ex's that uploaded/gave the pictures to the site, were also sentenced to jail time? probably none.

The extortion racket this guy was running is the shittiest thing he did imo, and is worthy of restitution to all those he scammed in to paying ,and also some type of fine and probation, but jail time? Really? Yeah let taxpayers foot the bill for this guy to spend 18 years in prison at about $50,000 usd($900,000 not counting any rise in costs in that time frame) for a nonviolent crime against a bunch of sluts. Smart and worthy use of state resources.....mmmkay.

This is a case of people not taking responsibility for their own negligence in decision making and the parties involved having to pin all the blame on a single patsy to rationalize their poor judgment.

The extortion racket is why he is getting this time, plus the number of victims. I'd imagine he would have got less time if it was one or two people, but a site like his would have had many victims, even into the thousands. While he may not have got much money from it, I'm guessing the amount of people who didn't pay was quite large as well.

prison is difficult, 18 years is a bit excessive.

this case reminds me of mugshots.com

the guy who owns mugshots.com owns like 4-5 sister websites and what this guy does is when you get arrested, your mugshot is temporarily public information. this guy post it on his website which then means if you google the arresting victim, you will see their mugshot on a google image search. To get it removed, you have to pay like $50, but that's for just one website. People I know have paid $50, only to see their mugshot up the next day via hosted from one of the "sister" sites. You pay each individual site to remove it, but apparently it's all one guy who owns the sites. Shitty way to make money, exploiting people and the system.

I'm not 100% on the American system, but know it is similar to the British system, which will mean he will serve 6. Likely in a low security prison with visits outside before that. That is pretty fair in my mind.

These people aren't criminals, they have done nothing wrong and don't deserve to have their most private photos shown to everyone. However, that wouldn't be a crime in my opinion, it is then asking them for money to remove it, when they haven't committed a crime(which de-facto gives consent for information to be provided, which includes the mug shot), since that is extortion. It is also on another level from a mug shot, unless you fancy stripping down and bearing your junk for all the cops in the station.

In order for me to fully grasp the situation in it's entirety, I would more than likely need to see said requested to be removed videos, so that I am fully informed of this topic we speak on.

Fuck this guy ethically, but...

  • He could literally rape any of the victims here and get less time...
  • All of us are now paying 30,000+x18 = 540,000+ USD to put him in jail
  • What exactly is the law here if you are in a home made sex video? do you own the rights? In that case its a copyright case and he should probably get SOME criminal time for the direct profiting, but really should be at the end of thousands of civil law suit
  • This is a case of people not taking responsibility for their own negligence in decision making and the parties involved having to pin all the blame on a single patsy to rationalize their poor judgment.
I actually disagree with this. There are some weird motherfuckers out there. People get weird when they are broken up with. There is nothing illegal nor really unethical about making sex videos or nude videos with/for your spouse. Years later they could get fucking crazy during the divorce. I can't on the bandwagon that something we all like (hot women sending us nudes) should be assumed to carry such a risk as a public extortion ring.
