I know the OG had an ingrained hatred from cyclist, but what about here? I was thinking of getting one to ride to work(4.8miles one-way). It would have to be some sort of cyclocross due to the terrain changes along the way, but I'm checking the prices at the local cycle shop and WOW... One of them is $6k. I thought I could pick one up for maybe $200 or something. Am I just stuck getting a Wal-Mart bike?

I bought this last year new from the left over 2014 stock. It's a Norco Threshold and its an awesome cyclecross bike. Paid $1100 which was a good sale price. I've riden on street and mild trails and I love it. I'm not a cyclist really but I just enjoy anything with two wheels.

I commute to work 4 to 5 miles each way by bike. Since I lock up outside, I bought the cheapest, non-shit bicycle available for about $180. Obviously it would be no good for racing. People often have multiple bikes for different purposes.

What kind? My budget is about $200. I'm not going compete in triathlons, just getting trying to stay in shape for Muay Thai.

I ran/owned a bike shop for 8 years, DO NOT BUY A BIKE FOR TRANSPOTATION FROM WAL-MART!

Check craigslist or what ever type of local classifieds you have, trust me on that.

I have a road bike that I paid about $400 for. If you're gonna go off-road, get a mountain bike with thicker, more durable tires.

If you're riding mostly on pavement, a road bike should be fine.

Mine is made by Giant and cost $400, but there are cheaper options from this brand. I would Google them or see where your nearest Giant dealer is.

Tbh, I think $200 is a bit low. $300 would prob get you a decent bike.

I say $200, but with any purchase, it can go up if needed.

I've been thinking about the possibility of opening up a small shop in the future as a side business, would be interested in your opinion and experience on the matter.

Its a good buisness if you stock properly, always have what sells on hand, no one wants to wait if they did they would just buy online. Thats if your planning a bike shop, but i think it applies to most buisness anymore. If you ever have questions just ask.

Get a $500-$600 used bike for $200-$300.. Much better value than getting brand new low quality bike. Plus if you get used you can try it out for awhile ,if you don't like it can sell and buy again the same used market and not lose on your investment. You buy new, its instant drop in investment IMO.
