I am a little worried indeed! From how far away is he shooting?
He’s only 7, so that’s only about 20 to 25 feet. I need to upgrade his bow to a stronger draw weight. It’s a kids bow so it’s really light (13.5 pounds) and that’s about as far as you can go accurately. The next level up is 18 pounds, so that should allow him to get a little more distance.

I’ve actually been thinking about getting myself target bow. I have a cheap recurve, and it works fine I guess. But it’s also pretty chintzy

I've been thinking about getting a bow, I have an empty section for a backyard so plenty of space.

I guess I'd need to set up some kind of backstop so I don't accidentally send arrows flying into the neighbour's yard/through their windows, since I'd inevitably end up shooting from a longer distance than I should.

I had a old and big canvas tarp that I used to use as a drop cloth. I string up a rope like you would for a clothes line, and drape the tarp over it as a backdrop. Gives me two layers that way. So now when I set that up I have an 8-foot square area behind the 24-inch target. So far he hasn’t missed bad enough to not hit the tarp. It’s not perfect, and it may get some holes in it, but it has been sufficient to stop his arrows at such a low draw weight. It looks kind of ghetto, so I take it down when we’re done. That’s the only drawback is when he wants to shoot I have to go string it up and get the tarp out.

I don't know what 20 feet are in metres. We started with 8m and ended at 18m I believe.
Its a cool skill to possess, I think I will try out a 3d Parcours next week.

I'm sure I can shoot, whether I'll be full Mongolian level right now... Maybe?
I reckon you are at full mongoloids level. Keep practicing until you can beat legolas and I may have a archery job for you.

i was thinking more about the Dothraki

(it may not be as clear from the show version which focused on their arakhs, but a skill they are known for is being deadly with the bow from horseback)

but i hear ya. dothraki, mongols....same thing

My son is shooting approximately where you started at 8 m, maybe a meter less. I haven’t actually measured, I’m eyeballing the distance. But now I have to go actually measure it!

For the record Q @Qat , I measured it earlier and my son has been shooting from 7.3 meters. That was just a distance that felt right and worked with where I set up his target. I can stretch it out a bit as he gets better, but if he gets really good I’m going to have to figure something else out. I like my neighbors, so don’t want any errant arrows!

And I even converted units for you!?

Yeah as you said a stronger bow and you can go away a bit further than that.

Safety first for sure.

We had a girl in there that even though the instructor specifically warned about it - ran face first into her own arrows while going to retrieve em. Had a nice scratch on the nose, lucky it wasn't her eye.

I think it happened because she was dreaming while staring at my body @Splinty
