An Arkansas dog lover was eaten by her pets after she died suddenly.

The unnamed 65-year-old woman was found dead in her Van Buren County home in August, when authorities investigated.

Local animal care representatives said they were shocked by the gruesome discovery when they found as many as 50 malnourished and aggressive dogs on the property.

“It was just a situation I don't want to go through again,” Van Buren County Animal Control Director Reta Tharp told the Huffington Post.

“They had never been vaccinated for anything. The dogs were inbred, some of them were sick.”

Tharp described the woman as a “hoarder” of dogs and said deputies had to shoot many of the animals just to gain access to the property. Authorities announced her death this week, after they returned to the home and killed an additional 26 dogs.

“We did all that we can do to protect the community,” Tharp said of their work over the last few months.

“There are neighbors in that area. There are children. The dogs were starting to wander into their yards.”

She said that about eight dogs remain on the property, waiting to be captured or killed.

It remains a mystery where the woman, who suffered from Hepatitis C, collected the canines from. Three years ago, authorities entered the property to put down 103 dogs

The woman previously had 103 dogs removed from the property.
According to the ASPCA, there are an estimated 900 to 2,000 new cases of animal hoarding each year in the U.S. involving a quarter million animals.
