Ben Saunders has suffered an injury during training which has forced him to withdraw from his welterweight bout at UFC Fight Night “Maia vs. LaFlare” against Erick Silva.

Multiple sources close to the situation informed Sherdog.com of the injury on Friday. The UFC has yet to publicly address Saunders’ ailment.

The March 21 card -- which takes place at Maracanazinho Gymnasium in Rio de Janeiro -- has been hit with multiple injuries since its inception. It was originally dubbed UFC Fight Night “Faber vs. Assuncao,” but Raphael Assuncaohad to pull out of the event because a broken ankle he suffered in December had not completely healed.

In addition, an injury to Josh Thomson canceled his scrap with Gilbert Burns. Finally, a back injury forced Matt Wiman to withdraw from his scheduled clash with Leonardo Santos.

The UFC Fight Night bill is headlined by a welterweight clash between Demian Maia and Ryan LaFlare, while Burns squares off against Alex Oliveira in another featured bout.

This card is falling apart quick. Your point about the judges could be valid. Also, the travel expenses could be a factor as well, when Zuffa only pays airfare and lodging for one cornerman...and everyone has to make that 20 hour flight (w/ multiple connections) in coach seating. If I lived in the US, I wouldn't want to make that trip either.

This sucks, since I really felt that Eric Silva was a good name that Ben could knock off. Eric is very overrated.

It just struck me as funny that 3 Americans are hurt against Brazillian opponents in Brazil. I've often watched the Brazil shows and thought that I wouldn't want to fight there in a place that can be so biased.

I'm not questioning any fighters hearts mind you. I think they are all true warriors but in the Zuffa era you have to manage your career carefully since one loss can derail you.

This card got violated and torn apart like a ring card girl hanging out with a Zuffa executive on a Saturday night.

You know what? I am happy with all the injuries happening on fight nights, so long as 185, 187 and 189 are left alone.

I guess that's true. I'd rather have a decent free card fall apart than a high-quality ppv. There were some solid matchups, though, so hopefully they get made in the near future. Saunders/Silva especially.
