The Walmart by me also doesn’t have cashiers at night. This may have been happening but I believe these people who were given horrible advice to protest made it happen much sooner and in larger numbers.

Self checkouts are less profitable for a business than cashiers. Until the labor is priced out of the market anyways. Self checkouts existed before minimum wage increase, and they've rapidly expanded (at least in my area of Ontario) since the minimum wage increase.

As has all retail based shopper technology as big box stores try to chase that Amazon share of the pie.

Companies are also making cashier-less stores where customers scan and pay for their own products with a phone app or based off technology built into the store itself which knows what you put in your basket and charges you accordingly. Technology will keep evolving old man, rates of minimum wage are not the main driving factor in this.

Next time I meet some semi-retired person, or a student who can't get a job I'll have to remember to tell them that. Very compassionate of you.

Its got nothing to do with compassion... technology keeps evolving. Cashiers among many others are the jobs which are going to be phased out.

Interesting enough, they are now saying a social science or liberal arts degree (the ability to comprehend, reiterate and critically think) will be the degree of the future vs educations focused on a specific skill set which can be replicated.

How about those new options shop online and either have it delivered by the grocery store or they meet you as you pull up with your order.. are those also being driven by a desire to cut wage costs?

Actually, it has everything to do with compassion. We're creating technology that no one needs just to feed the bottom lines of large corporations. It's hilarious to watch someone like you do mental gymnastics to justify why you don't care about people being unable to put food on their tables.

    Please, just stop.

    Great appeal to emotion.

This discussion has nothing to do with my compassion and everything to do with your claim the change in technology is being driven by a desire to avoid paying higher minimum wages. I believe otherwise, I think it is driven by the changing technology, job market and desire of the large retail stores to complete with online services like Amazon.

I didnt say it was my argument.

    Really, I would disagree.

Those services are more labour intensive than a cashier. Online shopping for local grocery stores requires more man power to complete an online shopping order (receiving and picking out the order, storing the order and packaging it for delivery to the customer) and then delivery than it would to have a cashier in the store running an order through.

Until they start charging for the service. Then they get the shopper and the labor effectively becomes a wash. Amazon started doing this about 5 years ago.

So you believe that a technology that already existed for years becoming popular within 12 months of labor cost going up 40% is pure coincidence?

You're also ignoring the more salient issue.

Bingo. Now we both agree, retail stores are chasing the Amazon wave.

I'm not going to pretend to know what the entry level labor market is like in Manitoba.

So you're making an over-all assumption based off your local experience. Gottcha.

Great, we agree. The big box stores are chasing Amazon, which is having a large impact on their customer experiences and the technology they are utilizing.

And do you think that companies are more or less likely to speed up the use of employee replacement technologies if labor rates spike in an extremely short period?

    Less.

As we just discussed, not all these new technologies actually reduce employee numbers or man hours. Instead it is a hit the grocery stores are willing to take to attempt to keep their customers from turning to online shopping.

So you think that if the your cashier's wages went up 40% you'd be less likely to opt for a technology that replaces them outright?

Sometimes it is ok to just give up or admit you misspoke.
