OK my recent thread about the all time classic horror flick (and best ever practical effects horror movie) The Thing (1982) got me thinking. What is the best horror film of all time?

For me it's a tie between The Thing (1982) and Aliens (specifically the 2nd film in that franchise, as good as the first film was).

Ooh that's a good one.

Very different from the book, which is awesome in it's own right, one of King's classics.

EDIT: One of the parts from the book that I wish had made it to the film was when Danny is out in the topiary area of the gardens, all the bushes & trees are cut into the shape of animals. Things start getting creepy, and he starts to notice that the animals move positions whilst he isn't looking at them, getting closer & closer, stalking him. He's in amongst them, so he can't watch all of them at once.

Well that's a thread derail in my first reply to my own thread lol, any other great horror films?

I say I'm not scared of ghosts. But I have jumped out a 2 story window because of suspected ghosts one time

Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Devil's Rejects

It has to be somewhat believable and get the adrenaline flowing.

Oh hi.

The correct answer is Event Horizon

I'm an eternal Rob Zombie fan but House of 1000 Corpses and DR are their own genre for me.

Texas Chainsaw 3D had some good moments...

But on a serious note- I always liked the original Dawn of The Dead.

Everyone slags it off and I knew it wasn't real footage etc but The Blair Witch scared me so terribly I was in tears when I left the cinema thinking my car was going to break down and she was going to get me.

Psycho (1960)

Friday the 13th (1980) - As campy and dumb as the sequels got, the first one was a pretty damn good film.

Another vote for The Shining and Texas Chainsaw Massacre

All good choices, Alien is one of my favourites.

I'd add Silence of the Lambs in there as well.

I love the old splatter horrors too and the comedy stuff, can't beat the Evil Dead for a good laugh.

sounds creepy and cool. I never read no horror story books, not sure it’s healthy to be reading that before going to sleep.

Is Jaws considered horror?

Because that's one of the best movies of all time, regardless of genre.

I don't count Jaws as horror myself, but I agree that it's up there in the best all time films for sure.

Silence of the Lambs had my stomach in knots. All time classic.

The second one (I think?) was just silly though, cutting out slices of someone's brain whilst they're still alive and feeding it to them? C'mon son.

Yeah the sequels were pretty shit but Hopkins is the man they have their moments.

Red dragon was a good yarn but the film was shite in my opinion.

Enjoyed a few episodes of Hannibal, Mads was good but over all it felt cheap to me, every episode there was a new mystery to be solved felt like murder she wrote after half a season.

For me Alien>Aliens as far as horror is concerned, but the 2nd one was the better film in a lot of ways, it was an action more than a horror though.

So many great characters in it
