“They said that after doing a physical on me and taking a look at my symptoms, a glutathione IV would be great for me. They told me that having the glutathione administered through an IV would be the best way for my body to absorb the antioxidant.

So the first thing I told them was that I am signed up with USADA year-round, so we have to take a look at their ‘banned substances list’ and make sure there is nothing in there.

We went through the banned substance list and of course glutathione was not on the list.

Once we discovered that nothing in the IV was on the banned substance list, I let the doctor administer the IV.

I was so focused on USADA’s banned substance list that I never gave any thought to the IV except for the fact that sometimes people had used them after weigh-ins before a fight.”

Medical pros, why can't IVs be administered from glass bottles? Wouldn't that get around this ban?

He talked shit to people who use iv's to rehydrate before a fight to have a size advantage. Big difference than someone receiving an iv for a blood transfusion or say treat a medical condition like
I deal with vertigo and well you have seen how many times I have been hit during my career. I figured if there was any chance that this could help my vertigo, motion sickness or maybe even improve my vision, as I have a lens from a previous cataract, then this was a good thing.

Nah he said IVs are for pussies. He diddnt specify certain circumstances etc. Then he popped a year later

Pray tell where glass bottle saline solution can be found. Also you'd need non-rubber tubing to administer the IV through, which is not the most convenient.

They are concerned with people diluting there samples.
This is what they say the IV rule is for:
WHY THE IV RULE?

To protect clean sport and athlete health and safety. It is a fact that IVs can be used to change blood test results (such as hematocrit where EPO or blood doping is being used), mask urine test results (by dilution) or by administering prohibited substances in a way that will more quickly be cleared from the body in order to beat an anti-doping test.

The USADA IV rules are very clear. BJ sounds about as convincing as Tom Brady.

So if he gets the flu gets hospitalized and gets an iv or into and accident and needs a transfusion that should equal a suspension?
I am pretty sure there was a clause in the rules stating IV use during hospitalization or in an ER is a valid excuse and would not be punished.

Hypocritical IMO.......first thought after usada substance approved or substance bannnd would surely have been "maybe I ought to check about the IV because I know better"......

thats a good question, maybe there will be an investigation and a review by a panel of Drs. I suspect in this case tho they called bullshit on it

From what I understand he unknowingly turned himself in and this is the aftermath.

If that happened he's just supposed to report it to USADA immediately. If it was on the up and up, why wait until a pre-fight medical to disclose?

Yeah this whole thing is starting to sound shady.

Its not like he called USADA up and told them about the IV. He waited until they were there to do a PED test and then decided to spill the beans.

Ive had a ton of physicals done. Not once did I have an IV or was one ever brought up.

Couldnt they just have given him some pills? Was it some sort of emergency where he had to have the IV right away?

BJ was one of the very few who it was pretty much unanimously agreed upon that was PED free. This is some disturbing news and goes to reiterate what I was saying years ago about literally everybody at the top level getting an artificial boost.

Agree, I'm also curious as to why this non life threatening treatment had to be done via IV

SC MMA MD @SC MMA MD @Splinty any thoughts on this glutathione IV explanation?

Preferably from SC as I believe he actually practices medicine whereas Splinty spends the majority of his time jetting around the globe with his 1% friends.

My grandfather was a physician and i've got an old glass IV jar from him. It's fuckin great to drink out of because the plastic tubing acts like a straw. But like Calavaro @Calavaro said, the glass container is nullified due to the plastic tubing.
