If you can’t live off 2k (plus emergency savings) per month in crisis mode, you’re living above your means... or are just fiscally irresponsible.
Really? I have no debt other than my mortgage.... 2k doesn't cover my mortgage

House next door to me is a dump, built in the 50s, 3 bedroom 1 bath, it's been a rental for the last 15 years with the same renter in there for 8 of them and he left it a mess. Listed for 500,000 and theyve had multiple showings a day... adding pandemic resistant increased my property value 150k thanks Rona

Yes.

He's what they refer to as a "Champagne socialist".
If he can pay all his bills on 2 grand a month he isn’t living the Champagne socialist life, unless you are inferring he comes from money so has no worry about expenses or income. Or are you saying he says you should be able to do that without being able to himself?

Hint: It's the second part, or at least he's fortunate enough to have landed in a position where he and/or his wife make good money.

My honest guess is that he makes good money, and has been working throughout this pandemic although I could certainly be wrong. People with a mortgage or paying rent in a city that make less than 6 figures per year are rarely in a position to save substantial amounts of money unless they live a very Spartan lifestyle.

So you think he’s lying to us.

Freeloading Rusty @The Bad Guy are you lying to us? I need a spreadsheet breaking down your monthly expenses.

How do you know his wife works?

A lot of social workers were not and still aren’t working. Can’t do too much without face to face meetings.
I was just making jokes, bro. In either case, he ain't paying all of his household expenses on the CERB alone.

I could get by on just the CERB, but my quality of life would be horrendous and I'd be burning through years worth of savings.

I’m being pedantic and trying to get him to put his money where his mouth is, as it were.

Who here can pay rent/mortgage, food, and phone/internet on $2k per month?
I actually can, probably a rare exception.

I also purposely created a life with low overhead and I carry zero debt other than mortgages(2)

Some areas it is probably hard to pay for what you listed on 4K tho, some places are so damn expensive

Definitely not born into money!

We both work good jobs with good pay. I have been with the same agency for over a decade. I worked two jobs (65 hours per week) for a couple years after university. Student loan debts have been paid off for about 5 years. We didn’t go over our heads with our mortgage. Mortgage was paid off almost two years ago.

Bills would be house insurance, car insurance, property tax, phone, internet, gas, hydro, living expenses, and the kid. We travel and enjoy ourselves but are fiscally responsible. 2019 was the first year I ever owned a new vehicle.
