B.C. finance minister says 'over my dead body,' will abortion access change

British Columbia's finance minister says she will fight to ensure abortion access rights are never denied in the province no matter what may happen in the United States.

Selina Robinson reacted strongly to questions about the status of abortion in B.C. and Canada following reports the U.S. Supreme Court may strike down the landmark Roe v. Wade abortion rights ruling.

In an interview with reporters at the legislature Tuesday, Robinson said "any change to access to abortion will be over my dead body."

Robinson says access to abortion is about health care and B.C. is committed to making sure that continues.

The 1973 Roe v. Wade decision protects the right to perform abortions across the United States.

A draft opinion published Monday reveals a majority of the U.S. Supreme Court’s nine justices were in favour of striking down the decision.

"Absolutely nothing is changing here in B.C. on abortions," says Robinson. "We believe abortion is medical care, good medical care."

PP is a lot of hot air. Where is any specific policy ideas?

Edit... PP stating he is currently reading JP's 12 Rules was cute. What an ackward moment of the debate when no one could answer a book they were currently reading. Just say so, dont be weird about it.

Liberals fire candidate who baselessly claims that ‘rebreathing’ by infants causes homosexuality

The Liberals have fired a second candidate in two days after the Star revealed the party’s standard-bearer in Parry Sound-Muskoka claimed — without evidence — that homosexuality is caused by infants “rebreathing” their own air shortly after birth.

Barry Stanley — a long-shot in the cottage country Tory stronghold for the June 2 provincial election, and a retired York Region elementary school teacher — is the author of a self-published 2009 book detailing his unproven theory.

“As soon as we learned of this information, he was terminated as a candidate,” Liberal campaign communications director Dan Moulton said Wednesday, minutes after the Star published the story.

“We unconditionally denounce these views.”

Most Canadians support the right to choose to have an abortion: poll

About four in five respondents to an online survey by Leger and the Association for Canadian Studies said they are in favour of a woman’s right to an abortion if she so chooses, while 14 per cent said they are opposed.

Seventy per cent of all respondents said they were concerned about the leaked plan to overturn Roe v. Wade, and almost half said they think the situation in the U.S. on the right to an abortion may have an effect in Canada.

The online survey of 1,534 Canadians between Friday and Sunday cannot be assigned a margin of error because internet-based polls are not considered random samples.

Federal government announces funding to expand access to abortion services
The Liberal government has announced more than $3.5 million in funding for two initiatives it says will improve access to abortion services and reproductive health information in Canada.

In Ottawa, Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos announced that Action Canada would be getting $2.1 million over three years to improve information and referral services.

The funding will be used also to help cover travel and accommodation costs for people seeking abortions.
