My wife had a nurse conference today and when she came out her car was loud as fuck. She called me and I find out that some piece of shit cut the catalytic converter off her element while it was in the parkade.

Turns out this happens all the time because of the precious metals contained within it.

Our insurance covers everything including rental car without a deductible but its a big fucking hassle.

I fucking wish I could’ve caught them doing it, it would’ve been seriously satisfying to beat the living fucking shit out of a piece of human waste who does this sort of shit.

Depending on the age and type of vehicle, the PGM's in a catalytic converter can be worth anywhere from $180 to a very rare $900. The new and/or smaller cars being closer to $200. The larger, older vehicles being closer to $500 and up. As for that $900, maybe if you own a tank. Do keep in mind that what the PGM's are worth is not what you will be paid. There is the labor, cost of metal extraction, overhead, and the buyer's expected profit margin; not to mention the greed factor. It would also be wise to be able to prove ownership. Otherwise, a phone call might be being made while you are talking with the potential buyer. Driving in with the actual vehicle or at least the vehicle's paperwork will give you more legitimacy and probably even a higher price. And for goodness sake, do ask around and shop around.

Watched a guy do this to one of our sleep medicine doctors Toyota SUV in our office parking lot a few years ago. Security/police came 30 Minutes later and filled out reports on the 5 cars in 2 lots by us they hit. Cordless saws all, 30 seconds or so per car. Drove up in a white van with fake temporary plates (plate applied for sign).
Last year some asshole cut my spare tire and lift crank off my truck the same way at a hotel parking lot in OK. Tempted to hang a new rim/tire full of concrete in its place.
$700 to get new lift/rim/tire, I can’t imaging a shitty steel GM rim and old tire were worth much as scrap.

This was a big problem in my city a few years ago. I think it got so bad the city started cracking down on the scrap yards and making them require signatures and stuff. A crackhead can no longer roll up with a trunk full of them and not expect to be hassled and prove where they are from.

i got a buddy who works at a muffler shop (no muff is too tough) . they have to keep their old catalytic converters that they cut off of cars locked in a cage because meth heads will steal that shit and take it to the recyclers .the mufflers just go in a bin .converters have platinum in them and are worth money

there is no rhyme or reason to what a gackhead will steal.they steal empty metal drums from my work all the time.they are worth 50 bucks a ton at the recyclers.they keep on stealing them anyways.

there is a fabrication shop on one side of us and a precision tooling shop on the other.people dumpster dive with magnets and throw everything magnetic on the ground and keep everything non magnetic to sell.fuck jumping into a bin of scrap metal and digging thru it with your hands just to make a few bucks.then we are left with their mess.if the shit was worth more than a few bucks then the shops would keep it for themselves instead of paying to haul it away.it seems like a whole lot of work for very little reward
